ever since ive been into cars, everything has been referred to by chassis/engine code. When i had my explorer, we had transmission, transfer case, and differential codes too. Its very specific that way, and is a great tool for someone who takes a few minutes out of their life to learn whats what. when i was into hondas, it was the same way. if someone says they have an ebp ej2 with a b18c and a ys1, i know everything about their car, how many doors it has, what color it is, what their gear ratio's are, whether they have an lsd or not, what what their valve cover looks like, how much power they make. all from 4 little codes.
My last car was an e30 with an m20b25. most people on this forum now know pretty much everything there is to know about it. Its not a BMW elitist thing. Its an enthusiast thing. obviously you aren't an enthusiast, at least not on the level with most of the people on this forum. Its a fact of life. |

I don't think that the OP shouldn't be allowed to have a BMW based on his comments... There are thousands of people around the world who own BMWs and think of them as "Just a car"...
I do however question his motivations for even joining a forum like this if that is his attitude... The only reason I can come up with is that he's a #$%@head - trying to pick a fight.... |

OK, this was a complete waste of a thread.
While it's clear that the OP is not an enthusiest, and is likely just posting for attention, the response of some of the "enthusiest" unfortunately proves his point to some degree. Not everybody who buys a BMW "gets it". In fact I still think most don't. But that's no reason to ban them from ownership or posting on the site. |

You guys got decoder rings?! dammit, I need to go talk to my Sales Associate. Where the hell is my decoder ring?
As to what OP is saying, someone once told me, if you don't have something intelligent to say, don't open your trap. even if you think you are being funny... Btw, E92N54FTW... i wonder if he can read that? |

The use of the word "precious" seems to apply perfectly. Check your dictionary. One definition is, "very fastidious, overrefined,or affected as in language, behavior, etc." Now check out affected or affectation, "artificial behavior meant to impress others, mannerism for effect."
I think it's not insignificant that nowhere in the owner's manuals supplied with your cars does BMW AG used terms to identify the car such as E82, E88, N35, etc. They simply call them by their proper names, such as 128i coupe, 135i convertible, etc. Of course I couldn't care less what you call your cars and the designation has nothing to do with being knowledgeable or an enthusiast. It seems the idea is "to impress rather than inform". Or put more simply, using E82 is merely "precious". |

I thought you'd link "precious" with "ring" in the thread title. I am disappointed with your lack of wit. The manual is written for the 90% (non-enthusiast) of the population (you're probably in that group). All automobile magazine articles (targeting enthusiasts) do use chassis and engine development code names in their introductory reviews. |

Now define troll:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Yes, Troll indeed. It seems like you don't get the fact that we don't care what you think of chassis and engine codes. It like the nerd who denounces sports because he can't follow statistics. Sad actually.

The owners manual is geared more towards your typical owner versus the enthusiasts that typically populate these boards, no point in using the internal chassis codes in the included manual as the typical owner likely couldn't care less about such information, assuming they even bother with reading the manual at all. edit : damnit MPBK beat me to the punch -.-

Also, when the manual says 135i, you know exactly which one it's referring to: yours. But when I say I own a 135i, tell me what part I need to tune my flux capacitor, you'd say (with a Number 5 robotic voice): input... need more input. But if I say N55, you know exactly which flux capacitor I'm talking about. His arguments are weak, at best. :shhh: Last edited by MPBK; 12-19-2011 at 11:58 AM.. |
