Who needs Quattro? The snow monster wears an M badge!
Well I have to say that, although it runs on Pilot Alpin with stock tire sizes and without spikes, it's quite good in the snow. So, who really needs quattro?
Will it slide? Oh yes. Sorry for the crappy pics, but it will do.

Of course not.
They are Pilot Alpin. Same sizes as the PS2's though.

Didn't know Pilot Alpin were available in stock 1M sizes. Newly released sizes maybe? Are we talking about new PA4?
EDIT: Just checked a few Michelin sites including French site, there are no 265/35 19 PA4s mentioned in official sites. Front size 245/35 19 are available in W speed rating and 93 load rating, perfect. However, rears in 265/35 19 (98 W) seem to be available only in PA2 which are two generations before actual PA4. So, did you mix PA4s and PA2s on front and rear? OP, could you clarify what sizes are you running actually and are they all newly launched PA4?

Just checked http://www.michelin.com because I had not seen those either.
Michelin Pilot Alpin is not (yet) indicated when you specify the BMW 1M in the winter tires configurator. However, recently made available winter tire sizes (at least in several countries) which should indeed fit the silver 1M stock 19" OEM 359 M Y-spoke Competition wheels (as well as the black M3 GTS Competition wheels, which are identical except for the color) (using size instead of car brand in the configurator):
Winter alternative offered by BMW (personally not my cup of tea): 270M 18" winter set-up (examples: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=93 and http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...&postcount=295).

That is standard trim in most countries including (almost?) all Europe. Shadow line is a paid and stand alone option which comes standard in certain markets like US.

Wow! The car looks super clean too.
Did you just wax it?

It's waxed, but not recently. The car sits in a warn garage all winter, and since there's ice everywhere now it stays clean while driving

I thought I saw a very good thread on rims/ tire combos but can't seem to find it now. Artemus did you contribute to that thread? That thread might be relevant to this discussion for those new to the wheel/ tire combos available.

On ice, nothing would really help you as much as a studded tire. And there you also want a narrower tire (e.g. just check out the WRC cars, they ride on what looks like a donut spare tire LOL) On the overall size of the winters, I think it is a decision based on where exactly you live. If you are say in the Snow Belt, then definitely downsize the tire width. If in the 'mid' Northeast, where snow rarely accumulates and you find yourself driving on generally cleaned up roads, then a much narrower tire would really compromise the handling and staying near or at stock widths may be OK.
