Shaking at high speeds...help please.
Ok so ive had the car about 2 months now its an 08 135i never had a shake until i changed to the continental no RFT. I brought it in to bmw because of the shake and they told me that my 2 front rims are bent i got them replaced and still at speeds 70+ im feeling a shake in the steering wheel and especially when off the gas at higher speeds. Could it be possible that the rear wheels aren't balanced properly making the car shake? i got the tires mounted at a local shop but now after the wheels were replaced the fronts are only balanced at bmw so this is my only conclusion but i really am not sure it could cause this...anyone have any input for me?

If you are feeling a shimmy through the steering wheel, the fronts need balancing. If it is a general vibration at certain high speeds with a stable steering wheel, then it's rear balance.

its hard to describe i feel both i think but i think its the rears because bmw just balanced the front with brand new wheels...the rears were balanced by a local shop that is supposedly good and ive never had a problem with but i think it has to be the rear wheels

Does your can OEM wheels? Or do you have aftermarket wheels that use a centering ring to mount on the wheel hub?
I would remove your wheels and clean any and all rust from the nose of the hubs. Any rust here and the wheel will not fit right. And cause some wiggle. It is amazing on how much our hubs rust. Atleast mine do with all the car washing I do. lol use a wire brush to clean your hubs and the backs of the wheels where they bolt to the hub. It also sounds like your wheels are bent. Maybe seek out a wheel shop that can correct bent wheels. Or buy a good used set of OE alloy wheels. Did you ever have your (4)wheel alignment checked when you installed the new tires? Perhaps this has caused some cupping and the vibration. Did it start right after your new tires or did it take some miles later to develop? Dackel |

well they replaced the front 2 rims since they were bent... im not sure if they checked the rears but thats possible i guess i figure they would have checked all 4 though...it happened after i got the tires and yes i did get a wheel alignment..maybe bmw messed up the balance on the front wheels or just the backs are out of balance

I would check your hubs for rust. On some cars IF you can find a show that can ballance the wheels while mounted on the car... that might just get rid of your problem.
The only real way to pin it down to your new tires would be to swap a set of tires from a friends car. Then road test for the vibration. Somes new tires can be bad. Usually just one though. IS your tire shop working with you on this? Dackel |

Have the tires been checked for 'out of round'? There could be something defective with the tire.

Sure. Plug your zip into our installer locator. Take it to one with the Hunter Roadforce equipment. They'll be able to tell you if it's a problem with the tire. If it is the tire, we can work on getting you a replacement under warranty.

Of course, we also talked about you being able to swap these out at any local Continental dealer, as they won't need collateral for the tires in question.

My theory is that BMW dealers suck.
The last time they did an alignment on my car my steering wheel as 30 off center when the tires were straight. I had positive 1 degree of camber on one side and negative .5 on the other and my wheels were not balanced properly. I go to the guy who does balances and alignments on drag cars on LI and my alignments held for 2 years through bent and cracked wheels. Dealers suck at their job plain and simple |

Dude I really hope you kept the rims that your useless BMW dealer told you were bent if you paid for them... if they replaced them under warranty, which I doubt, then it makes no difference... but if you paid for 2 brand new rims that didn't need replacing, you got screwed!
