Getting new car, what should I do?

Hey guys!

I am going to get my new car soon! 2010 White GTI Anyways, the dealer will probably just wash it, thats it but I want to prep it carefully after I get it.

What should I do? Some people say I need to clay, some not etc.. So in order, what should I do? For example should I :

1. Wash exterior
2. Treat Leather
3. Clay
4. Polish
Wax?

etc etc.. I do not know the exact order of things so help would be really appreciated!

Thanks a lot !

First of all.. Since it would seem that you are pretty ambitious, DON'T let the dealer touch it. Most of the time they just screw up new paint jobs.

I doubt you'll need clay or polish (depends on how dirty it is when you get it). A good two bucket wash + a good wax will do you just fine I'm sure.

Treating leather is a good idea too.

Have fun!

okay... noob question: Wax vs Polish? I would assume Wax protects the paint and polish... well polishes it, but how come I see pictures of car after they are applied with Swissvax and they look gorgeous... isn't wax is made to protect the paint and then you polish?

hmmm looks like you need to do some reading up as well. go to the swissvax home page and download their detailing handbook. this should give you a good idea.

with new cars, a misconception is that they do not need to be clayed. it all depends on how long they have sat in storage. the longer in storage the more pollutants it has had time to collect on its paint.

if you want to do it properly:
- do not let dealer prepare the paint
- wash
- clay
- polish (random orbital works best for beginner)
- wax

think of polish as an exfoliant and wax as a moisturiser and you have their main purpose.

Properly caring for a new car will help you preserve it's value and make future cleanings much easier. Here are two great kits and a full write up about the process at each link:

DI Packages New Car Care Advanced Kit
DI Packages New Car Care Starter Kit

If you read those links that should give you a good idea of what steps and products can be used. If you have any other questions please let me know.
