Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner

Are any of you guys using this product and does it help with the build up that appears to afflict our motors?

Hmmm. Ok. I did read up on it first and the general consensus was that because its introduced into a vacuum line and not the fuel it could potentially work. Unfortunately there wasn't much on if it was safe to use in the n54 or effective.

basically direct injection injects fuel straight into the combustion chamber:

Our bmws run the setup in the bottom diagram.

Another example is this:

The buildup occurs on the valve like so:

Since the fuel doesn't come into contact with the intake valves like a convention EFI setup (as mentioned fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber) the detergents commonly marketed in shells v power does bugger all for carbon buildup on the N54.

It's in thai but you get the idea:

So adding any form of additives will not clean this buildup, it has to be removed by walnut blasting or by scraping by hand with wire brushes and carby cleaner etc (the crud sets quite hard due to the heat generated from the combustion process and engine operating temperatures)

I will need to go back through and read it again. I thought that because it is an aerosol product that is added into the air intake and not the fuel that would mean it would be the kind of product that would have the potential to work since air passes the valves into the chamber.

I will go through it again when I am awake.

I must admit i havent used the aerosol cleaners, but i doubt it would make any difference, as in this application the carbon buildup is generally quite significant and sets quite hard.

Even if you were to get enough solution onto the intake valves via squirting an aerosol, it wouldn't remove the buildup unfortunately.

But it would be nice to be proved wrong

I have been researching this issue for months and am just about to outlay $1000+ on an air compressor, media lasting kit, dry vac nozzles etc to do a walnut blast myself:
