BMW n54 recall - USA only!!!!

BMW USA has issued a recall for the High Pressure Fuel Pump.
BMW USA has extended the fuel pump warranty to 6 years, 120k miles.
BMW Canada has done neither.
Transport Canada has ZERO safety complaints about the BMW HPFP.

If you are in Canada and drive a 335, 135 or 535, please do the following:
1 - Take 5 minutes and fill out the "Online Public Defects Form" - third link on the attached page. https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur...DPP/Index.aspx
2 - Call BMW Canada at 1-800-567-2691, press 1 for English, 0 for a live person. Register a complaint that BMW Canada has not extended the warranty or issue the recall like BMW USA has on the exact same car/issue.
3 - Forward this information to any other BMW owners with the same "35" engine and ask them to follow up, especially if they have had a fuel pump failure.

You'll need your VIN for the Transport Canada complaint form.

Only if we, Canadian BMW Owners, accumulate a critical mass of complaints will BMW Canada give us the same warranty and recall that BMW USA does.
Please, follow up with BMW Canada and Transport Canada.

So you really think that BMW Canada wouldn't warranty a fuel pump if it died out of warranty range? With all the shitty press in the states I'm pretty sure they would. The recall is just a software flash so I don't know why you want to make a huge deal out of nothing. I think the only reason BMW is doing the recall is because of all the bad press so they're trying to save face, but have they actually fixed the problem? I heard the revisions on the fuel pumps are the same now as they were before which still had problems. Really they haven't fixed the problem but once they finally do, maybe then they'll do a recall in Canada.

Here's my exchange with BMW Canada yesterday (read bottom up).

At this point, the firm answer is a resounding NO to both the 10yr warranty and the recall.

Dear Mr. ME:

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, there is no further information available at this time.

If you have any further comments, please reply to this email or contact the Customer Interaction Centre at 1-800-567-2691. Again, thank you for contacting BMW Canada.

Christa,

Well, in speaking with the Service Manager at one of the two dealerships in Edmonton, I know that there are clients who are on their third HPFPs, so this issue is just as prevalent in Canada as it is in the US.

To that end, I wonder why BMW Canada has not even acknowledged their US counterparts' 10yr warranty extension on the HPFP. Perhaps it's the over-litigious situation in the US and fear of a class-action lawsuit, however, one would surely think that given Canadian's pay more for the same car, that BMW Canada would at least honour a similar situation with all affected N54-equipped vehicles here.

But, perhaps this goes over your level in terms of what information you've been supplied with... Is there anybody else at BMW Canada to whom I can contact, one-step shy of the CEO of BMW Canada, to voice my concerns?

Regards,

Richard

Of course they're going to say that. I want to see actual evidence of someone going to a dealership out of warranty with a bad HPFP and getting charged for a replacement. I am 99.9% sure they will continue to replace them until a proper solution is found.

Why shall we need to take a gamble at this? What I want is in writing that the warranty on the HPFP is extended to 10 years. Not just a guess that they will replace it down the road.

The same voluntary recall as the states would be icing on the cake.

I believe the U.S. recall was motivated (at least in part) by an ABC network news program detailing the N54 failures.
You guys may want to get one of our national network to look into a similar expos-eh. The left leaning CBC loves this sort of merde.

HPFP Warning

Here is what the warning looks like in the iDrive screen if anyone is interested.

My problem started a couple of days earlier, the car was shuddering a bit under acceleration. Funny thing was I always use Petro Canada (Formerly Sunoco) 94 gas, and my issues started after I got half a tank of Petro Canada 91 in a pinch.

The car basically stopped working accelerating from a light, the warnings came on and the car immediately went into limp mode. Unlike these pussies;

http://www.youngmanblog.com/2010/10/...pump-problems/

I never felt 'afraid for my life', however I am glad it did not give out on the highway.

Dealing with the problems is also half a day out of your life that you won't get back.

I will say the level of service I received at Endras BMW was far superior to BMW Toronto, it took 2 days to get everything done, apparently they had to change my fuel injectors too. They provided me with a loaner (mini cooper). so that part was painless...

I am thinking of buying a second home in Arizona, if I do, I will be buying my next car in the US.

So, do you feel happy that American owners got their 4yr warranties increased to 10yrs for the HPFP in March 2010 and are now receiving a better pump under recall...and you, a person who bought a Canadian-market car for more money are getting nothing, repeat, NOTHING extra out of BMW Canada other than the "There is no problem" spiel?

Response from Transport Canada

Hi All,

I'm pleased to announce that I have received a response from Transport Canada regarding a complaint that I registered with them using the above link. The following is what I received via email today....

Dear Mr. XXXXX:

We are pleased to provide you with an update to your inquiry to Transport Canada concerning the fuel pump problem you reported to us.

BMW Canada has determined that an emissions-related problem exists on some 17,798 -2007 to 2010 model year BMW vehicles. These vehicles are certain BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X6 and Z4 vehicles equipped with the N54 twin-turbo in-line 6 Cylinder engine.

Owners will receive mailed notification beginning in November 2010. Corrective action will consist of replacement of the high pressure fuel pump and/or a software update on all affected vehicles.

This notice and recall is being conducted in Canada by BMW Canada, as a requirement under Environment Canada's Canadian Environmental Protection Act, (CEPA) 1999. This is not part of Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Act, (MVSA). This recall will not be listed on Transport Canada's Website.

Should you require additional information, we are pleased to provide the following contacts:

Environment Canada: email - vehicleandengineinfo@ec.gc.ca

BMW Canada: email - customer.service@bmw.ca Telephone: (800) 567 2691

Thank you for your inquiry to Transport Canada, and for your participation in our Road Safety Programs.

Yours sincerely,

John XXXX

Sooo.... I interpret this to being pretty good news, although it doesn't necessarily solve the warranty extension issues... One step at a time I guess!

Hey dread1, I also have a US-spec 1 and was wondering which buffalo dealership do you go to and still warrants your free oil change etc? Did you buy the car from that dealership as well? And do you have a specific SA that you like?

Well I've had my pump replaced twice within the life of the car (bought in late 2008). I'm originally from the US so the first time was not even a year ago in the US (Sept 2010), and then while up in Toronto the engine light came on and I took it to the dealer here and they replaced the pump again, no questions asked, under warranty. Funny how the 1st pump lasted over a year with and was replaced because of long cranks but no light, and the 2nd pump goes within a few months with multiple engine lights. And I barely drove the car between the 2nd and 3rd pumps!

Oh well, at least I can say the dealerships in Canada seem to be well aware of the issue and won't hesitate to replace yours if it's faulty.
