one of the recent automotive mags (C&D, R&T, MotorTrend, Automobile) just did a big tire test comparing max and extreme performance tires against the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 as the benchmark. the Dunlop Direzza Star Spec came in first...and beat out the PS2 as well. there were a couple tires missing...the the star spec is an AMAZING TIRE...i might be going this route sometime soon.

I think I saw that article in Grassroot Motorsports. I think 'mikeo' is running Star Specs on his AutoX 1er.

the star specs are the only way to go. i heard the previous tire was their first attempt and they did not heat up quick enough or have enough grip to satisfy the engineers/technicans. they tried again and created a monster...and so they released the star spec.

personally i HATE my dunlop sp sport01 RFTs because they are a compromise tire. the Bridgestone RFT's are much stickier...and are a much more performance oriented tire than the sport01's. sadly i did not get to choose which tires came on my car, but if i could have those would never have touched my rims.

i want to go around that 30 MPH onramp at 65 with no squeal or loss of control, not just at 55 like with my sport01 RFT's. the Star Specs will make that possible!

the DZ101s are the predecessor of the star specs, however dunlop still sells them. The dz101s are pretty loud according to my friend, I'd step up to the star specs if I were you.

Nitto recently put out the NT05 as a dry weather, high grip street tire.

That Dunlop has been a bit less than stellar in our testing. We've put them up against equal competition twice (Test One, Test Two.) I clearly remember them leaving much to be desired, especially in wet conditions.

If you want to stay in that price range, the General Exclaim UHP's are very good, excellent in the wet, and have a high wear rating. I have these in 225/45 r17 all around and have been very happy with them, but I don't drive them really hard.

Yoko s.drives are also supposed to be a good, affordable tire.

I would probably choose these over the Z101s.

I know i'm a bit of a broken record. But my PS2s are just great. Far better than the runcraps. They make the vert handle like a beast. They have about 10K miles on them and even the rears still have plenty of meat on em (I'm hoping about 20K miles on the rears)

I got mine for free tho, but I will be buying another set when mine finally wear out.

Great testing. The DZ101 are not that great. However, the Star Specs are a totally different animal, and I would HIGHLY recommend those. I've had Contis SC and SC2, PS, PS2, S-03's, Azenis 615 and 215's, Yoko AD-07's, etc... The Star spec is damn cheap, yet thoroughly trounces all of the predecessors.

I'm bumming that I'm (temporarily) back on my RF stockers, waiting for my new wheels to come in... that will definitely be shod with 255&275 Star Specs.
