I purposely did not order the premium audio option because I didn't hear an appreciable difference. I also recently spent some time listening to it as some very high volumes and found no huge problems with distortion. However, I also listen to most of my music from mp3 or AAC files so that isn't exactly audiophile quality to begin with. I also do notice that from song to song there is such a variance that it is hard to even compare systems.

I'm sure some people would like more in their audio, but I'm pleased with what I have.

I've heard good things about the BSW speakers. I have an old friend who swears by them, but he lives over 1000 miles from here and I haven't actually heard his set-up. He is a confirmed "audiophile" though.

Anyway, I contacted BSW a couple of weeks ago and they said that their upgrade kit should be available about the 1st of March. For $650 for direct replacements with BMW connectors, I plan to give it a shot.

I really wasn't all that impressed with the premium sound package when I listened to it at the dealership before ordering, so I left it out. But then when it comes to sound I'm hard to impress, and "thumpa-thumpa" really doesn't do much for me. Come to think of it, I just assumed the dealership had the controls set to center/flat, so that could have been part of the problem. Mids sounded "stifled" and high-hats just didn't have that "zing", sounded a little raspy to me. Bass was OK, but mid-bass was a tad muddy. Not really bad, but I tend to be hyper-critical in this area and knew I would want to improve on it, so why pay the extra $800?

I am glad I didn't order mine then... I have it on my E46 and it's very balanced but not much dynamic depth.

I have the base system in my 135i vert. Actually, i'm impressed by how well the base system sounds. Its not bad at all. And anyway, theres no substitute for having the top down and the N54 roaring just a yard ahead of you.

I wish BMW used Bang & Olufsen audio as Audi use, I was really impressed with quality and almost was ready to get A4 instead of 1ser.

B&W or Dynaudio would have be better... but I have hard lots of good things with their Individual Audio with Dirac.
