New (to me) 128i Vert... dealer options checklist?
Hi guys! I bought a Montego Blue convertible for my wife a few weeks ago, and have a few questions. This is BMW #8 for me (I like 'em!) but I bought it out of state. They didn't do any of the programming on the car based on my preferences like I've had done before... so... I can't open the top with the remote (I believe this is possible? 2010 128i Convertible loaded with everything but Nav). The doors don't lock auto at 5mph, and on one remote the seats automatically return to the saved positiong but on the other they do not.
Does anyone know if, since I bought the car from BMW (and BMW was the registered owner, although used, it had not been registered to an individual) am I 'entitled' to another BMW dealership doing this programming or will I have to pay $125/hr for someone to punch some buttons on a computer? I appreciate the assist / advice! |

You can program things yourself. The manual tells you how. I was happy to have Willie at the PC program both keys for me during PCD but I have since changed a thing or two. I can't do it without the manual but with it I am fine. If you don't have the paper manual it is available on line from BMW NA.

And if the car has the $500 Comfort Access option, you can raise & lower the top with the remote simply by holding the appropriate button down while within about 8 feet of the car.
If you have CA & it's not working, try replacing the CR2032 fob battery -although they usually last 2~3 years. Enjoy your new 'vert! Tom |

Yeah I read through the manual.. like i said this is BMW #8 for me, but the first I've had that allows you to set these things yourself without the dealer doing it. Like that.
Thanks guys, I got everything working. I'm aggrevated that the top down option requires CA. That has NOTHING to do with CA. My MZ4 Roadster allowed be to retract the top quickly and easily with the remote. I love how they cripple features then add them to packages to try and make the pricing seem more reasonable. I didn't order CA because I don't really care about keyless start. I *do* care about the remote top retract though. And at least let us hold the unlock button and roll the windows down... like every other coupe and sedan since the E46s!!! Geez. |

Is CA really required to lower the top remotely, or is it actually just a matter of a coding change with NCS Expert or the dealer scan tool? Also, you should be able to lower all the windows with the remote. It's my understanding that all modern BMWs allow this, or at least that has been my experience.

I'm with ya. But I can hold unlock all day long and nothing happens. My MZ4 did it, my M Coupe did it, both of my e46s did it and my two X5s did it. Dunno.

I don't know about re-coding but if you want better convertible top functioning you can get it, at a price. This isn't the cheapest source I've seen for this but this link specifically references the 1 series:
http://www.pcars.com/porsche_parts/s.../p_185272.html In addition to allowing operation with the remote, it also allows one tap to open or close the top. I've seen what may be the same thing for $300 from other sources. If you google "smarttop" you can get more information. I saw a video of it installed on a 1 series. Jim

And my '08 1-series does it. The moonroof opens as well. My brother's '01 M3 did this as well, as has literally every other BMW I've spent time with.

A non-CA 1-vert will not open the top remotely. You have to sit in the car and hold the button.
