PPK And Spark Plug Warranty
I had the PPK 1 installed a few months ago and the usual sticker on the car says to change the plugs after 40K. I asked the dealer if this is would be covered under warranty, he said no. Was this the case with others????
Thanks |

Imo plugs are more like a 20-30k deal with a tune, even a more conservative one like ppk. But to my knowledge, ppk doesnt alter the terms of your warranty so free plugs cant be done ahead of "schedule". PPK folks should chime in soon...

BMW NA pays to replace spark plugs(free!) on the 135i @45K miles and at 100K miles for 128i models. Spark plug replacement schedule should be listed in your maintenance (service) book.
Changing your spark plugs every 25K to 30K miles with a tune(even a PPK) is a good idea. See my DIY on changing spark plugs in the DIY section.

I agree it's a good idea and I will change them myself if I have to. But is this considered a warranty claim or not????? Maybe I could call BMW Canada?
Sorry, I just looked and the sticker said 60000 km..... |

I wouldn't see why after buying the PPK would void the warranty. I think you're dealer is misreading things or trying to be shady. I'd call BMW Canada and let them know. You should be eligible for a free spark plug change.
But changing the plugs in the car is easy enough and let you get yours hands dirty while getting to know your car a little more. |

You can't just go into the dealer and ask for spark plugs under maintenance. The PPK should not affect your warranty coverage, but the 45k mile spark plug interval is just an approximation. Depending on the software level in the car, there may not be a specific 'spark plug' menu in your service info. Most of the cars now just have the spark plugs replaced in conjunction with the 3rd oil service (which usually comes up around the 45k mile mark). This shows up on the key reader data when they initially write your car up for service. Unless they are showing 'due' in some fashion or another, they're not going to be covered by maintenance. If there is some kind of defect in a plug and it's causing a misfire, then that is a different story. Defective plugs are covered under the terms of the new vehicle warranty. I hope this helps clear things up a bit.

On the 3 series they have a "change the spark plug" icon in the instrument pannel/cluster. Our cars do not. (well... I hear you can have it coded into our cars! lol) Most dealers are clueless on the spark plug changing interval. You HAVE to ask for it. IF they balk... show them your maintenance booklet. Its right in there - spark plugs due at 45K miles for 135i models. Most dealers only remember that at 100K the plugs are due on 128i models. The 135i needs them changed at 45K miles. On EU cars with a PPK they get this decal for under the hood. Once again BMW AG has a different service interval then BMW NA.
