How long did your OEM tyres last?
Hey everyone
I know we've covered a few topics on tyre replacement but I couldn't find any threads specifically covering what mileage you all got out of your original runflats. I'm coming up on 15,000kms (yes, after two years, I'm not quite there yet - it's disgraceful), and I'm noticing more and more that traction is becoming less and less, especially in the wet. So my question is: How long did you go before replacing your tyres? What should we be getting out of a set of tyres? Obviously I accept that the more "spirited" driving you do, the less life you're going to get out of your tyres but how long should they be lasting for? Cheers Dave

Rears - 14,000km and they were worn. Goodyear paid for my replacements .
Fronts - Still on, and at 33,000 the edges are going, being replaced this month. |

The places to keep an eye on are the edges on your fronts (inner & outer). Because of the increased sidewall stiffness, they will wear quite considerable once worn in properly.
I'm just suprised my fronts have made it more than twice as far as my rears! |

My rears lasted ~40,000 kms. Mixed driving conditions...
Front's still have 45% of life left. However they've been replaced with Conti non-RFTs, = awesome. ps: we need a world cup thread... or maybe not |

Im on 23,000km's.. Originals still on..
Front still have about 7K Km left on them. Rears have about 2K left and need replacing ASAP.. Last night whilst driving in second gear, went to overtake and accelerate to about 80% of full throttle and the ass of the car totally drifted to the right as I lost complete traction.. |

Sold them at 10,000km and replaced them with something decent, which was 10,000km later than I should have done it :P

Like others, rears lasted 15,000km. Front OEMs still around 60-70% tread at 23,000km.
Replaced the rears with RE-11s. Think I'll get about another 5,000-6,000km out of them before very likely another set of 255/35 R18 RE-11s go on. Tempted to replace the fronts for the sake of the ride quality to non-RFTs, but since I love the steering feel and can't get the front to understeer since getting the M3 bits fitted, I don't see the point TBH....

I replaced mine at 23000km with new set of run flats. The new set are a lot more comfortable than the OEM set for some reason. Must be next generation tyre. I would say that they are as comfortable and perform as well as the same RE050 non run flats I have on my Subaru Liberty GT.

I've been doing this since December. Have had OEM RFT's on the front, with 235 non RFT on the rears. No issues at all.
Looking at a very pronounced tread pattern for the fronts. I always ran that system with my Subaru's, often with completely split setups (brand and model) between front and rear. More rubber contact for the rears, and better channeling (at least 4 directional channels) for the fronts for wet handling. My belief is this system will be even better in a RWD car. I'm looking to go up to 225s (from 205s) on the front, so the car will be pretty beasty for cornering. Just need to build some grip strength as the steering will be a fair bit heavier! |

Thanks for all the replies. I can't believe how far some of you are getting out of your rears!
Neil, I'll let you know if i'm planning a purchase mate. I'm going to try a little less liberation of the throttle pedal and have a good look at the amount of tread left on the tyres a bit later this week. Will also try and get to some tyre places over the next couple of weeks to price locally so I can see what i'm up against. I'd only replace the rears I think at this stage as the front are ok I think.

when you guys say sell, to who?
do tyre shops buy your tyres if they're okay condition? and then those who replace with non runflats, do you buy a spare wheel as well??? |
