When my car is cold and I pull up to a stoplight, as I begin to pull away from a dead stop I get that same clunk.

Having the same problem. It has been driving me crazy. I am going to go to the BMW service center this Saturday and see if they can figure out what the issue is. I will have them check about the fuel meter/tank. Also they are going to check the front passengers wheel since i have a wum wum wum sound coming from that when I make any type of left circle or u turn. Sounds like the wheel bearings. I love my car but I have hardware quality concerns with this vehicle. I only have 7000 miles on the car.

Yeah, I wish it was that easy...
My trunk completely empty, I also took out the tool kit out from the battery compartment area. So nothing is in the trunk, period.

the dealer checked my car and told me that it's the "flap" inside the tank that makes the sound. they told me that bmw doesn't have a fix for that issue yet. told them about the "fuel meter" and the new tank. they said that the new tank does the same and they are still waiting for the reply of BMW AG regarding this issue. will go back to the dealer to have both of my tail lights replaced. |

Sorry to dig up old thread, but I now have the right rear clunk. Am confident not pads. Happens all the time irrespective of fuel quantity. Can be induced by breaking or accelerating.
Any resolutions anyone? |

Got the same problem here after coming back from the dealers for replacing my rear brake pads... So that tells me its brake pads related?
Only happens when i brake from either accelerating forward or reversing slowly...doesn't sound right at all. like two bits of metal clunking together (sounds like the pads to me..) |

Sure sounds like the tolerance between the caliper and the steel backing plate (of the brake pad) has too much clearance and can shift back and forth, which would create a metallic clanking type sound. You could try a noise elimination compound on the mating surfaces or consider a performance upgrade beyond OE with much less dust, better braking performance and tolerances held very tightly on the overall length of the Brake pad. Cool Carbon Performance Brake Pads will easily satisfy all of these issues.
