BMW has new upgraded tail light design(TSB not a recall!). Contact your dealer for more info.
Your car will need two new tail lights. BMW will cover this under the warranty. The new designed tail lights - are made better - so that the three LED's tubes will not become detached from the circiut board - inside the tail lamp housing. Most of the '08 thru '09 (e82) cars have this problem. My 135i - Dec, 2009 build (2010 M.Y.) went out last month. I suspect BMW will expand its TSB to include 2010 models too. BMW's new tail light design just came out in the first week of December, 2010. It took BMW two months to gear up for the new improved tail light design. Good Luck, Dackel |

Not for my car.
I understood it to be a TSC (Technical Service Campaign) not a recall. A recall is always good(time and miles/kms). A TSC is only IF a customer complains on that issue. And once the warranty is over - your out of luck. Unless your regional service manager ok's the repair/fix. And besides... I also understand that only 2008's & 2009's were effected by this TSC - my car is a 2010. Dackel |

I own a 2009 128i... your saying my rear lights could suddenly go out and I would have to get a replace from the dealer?
Ugh.... another bulletin that wastes my time putting my car through again and again. |

^^Yes. But you DO NOT need to wait for one of the lights to stop working, Just go to your dealer and have them upgrade both rear tail lights. They will most likely need to order the parts beforehand.

With the service campaign... you DO NOT need to wait for one of the lights to fail/not work. Just take your car into your nearest BMW dealer - and have them updated to the new lights.

Both of my tail lights have been intermittent with this issue on my 2008. It started about two week ago. I called the dealer this morning, and they are claiming there is no open recall on this problem. Is there a reference re-call or service campaign # that I can ask the dealer to reference? I'm out of the factory warranty but do have an extended warranty with the CPO...
Any thoughts? |

There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) on this and IF the tail lights fail while under the two year warranty BMW will replace them for free. Its a "service campaign" meaning they have to fail WHILE your under warranty. Sorry buddy looks like your SOL. But don't worry... new LCI or even the same tail lights are pretty cheap. I wanna say under $280 for the pair. All new tail lights should be of the new LED design. I would check the part for a build date after Jan 2011. Dackel

IDK. It could not hurt to ask. Or even ask BMW NA if they would consider replacing the lights. The LED tubes corroding and failing is a known issue by BMW. Hopefully they step up for you and cover the replacement.
