Insurance and most dealers do not do insurance billing so if you really wanted to go to the dealer you would have to pay out of pocket and wait for the insurance company to reimburse you. As long as whoever is does it uses Pilkington glass you'll be fine. Mine cracked last week and is being fixed this Sat by Alliance who is using Pilkington which is what comes on the car.

Mine had a crack and was replaced. I used a local auto glass shop I used before and the windshield was Pilkington glass. They ask me if it had a condensation monitor which I did not know if I had it or not. They ordered both windshields but it turns out I did have it and it is used with the climate control that has the auto function which I have. The guy from the glass company was into cars. In fact it was done at my house and the guy doing the install called and had two other guys from the glass company stop by to check out the car.

One other thing I have seen glass companies do to screw up the job is to put to much glue on the A pillar and it oozes out where you can see it on the A pillar. And you get to choose the tint stripe at the top, green or grey. Since I have SGM I took grey.

I think you're talking about the rain sensor behind the rear view mirror. It comes with the premium package and has nothing to do with climate control. If you push the button on the end of the wiper stalk it will go into auto mode which will modulate the wipers depending on how wet the window is getting. When I booked the appointment the glass shopped asked me if it was with or without the rain sensor.

Obviously, I had a bad glass shop; however, I would urge you to look at the actual BMW windshield replacement instructions. They are very, very detailed and specific regarding how the windshield is positioned and glued. As you know, the windshield is a structural element in these vehicles as well as a bug killer. I would never let a glass shop do the replacement unless I was convinced that they had all the proper measurement guides and other equipment necessary to do the job according to BMW specs. Actually, after what I've experienced, I'd just have the dealer or BMW Certified Collision Center do it.

Interestingly, I used a certified BMW Collision Center (which happens to be owned by my local dealer). The Collision Center charges a body repair rate of $90/hr. If I had the work done at the local dealer, the labor rate would have been $160/hr for the same work.

I'm going to let the glass people do it and if it's not to my liking I have 1yr to have it replaced.

It may be to your liking, but, unless you have the BMW measurement guide(s), you probably won't know that it is out of spec.

The car also has the option for the rain sensor but I did not mention that since you know if you have the rain sensor or not. If you pop the cover on the inside of the windshield behind the rear view mirror and there is a connector, you have the condensation monitor. These are two separate connectors. When I first called about my windshield I was unaware of the condensation monitor like you, and I even started a post to see if anyone else knew about it. No one knew about it but I saw it with my own eyes.

From what I understand, Pilkington is the only company that makes windshields for our cars...

Safelite did mine, and the guy was great. They missed a few parts when they ordered it the first time, so he had to make a second trip to actually install it, but the installer knew exactly what he was doing.

I'm not sure if its still the case, but when they did mine they ordered the glass from BMW. At the time no one else carried it.

Good to hear that someone had a good experience outside of the dealer. Personally, I trust the people who replace windows 25 times every day to those who replace 1 or 2 a month. All this talk of "spec" makes it sound as if anyone other than BMW replacing the window will make your wheels fly off on the highway.

Most auto dealer shops won't be doing the work anyway.
My Audi had a stone crack. State Farm gave me the option of going through an independent or through the dealer. I went to the dealer because they gave me an Audi loaner. The dealer simply ordered the specific OEM part, but an independent came in and did the work. Audi billed my insurance.
Could be different in different states and different insurance companies in terms of billing. But, from what I saw most dealers don't do the actual replacement. It's more cost effective to have an independent come to the shop and do the work.
