Considering near-term sale, what to do about tires??
Looking for some quick advice. I'm unfortunately looking at trading my 1er within the next 60-90 days. I have a baby on the way and buying a home in PA, so looking for to save some $$ and get something more versatile and all-season. Likely '11 WRX, LegacyGT, or CPO x-drive 3er or A4. I'll take advice on that...
BUT the real question is what to do about getting new tires. My rears are BALD, to the point the rear hydroplanes very easily (quite an interesting experience actually) So I need new tires immediately. I'm still running the OEMs. I'd planned to replace with Hankook V12 or Dunlop Star Spec for myself. Since I'm likely going to sell/trade, will the non-RFT come back to bite me in the ass? I really need to save my cash here, so I'd rather not fork over the money for Run -crap. I'm sure if I sold to a fellow member they'd either prefer the non-RFT or prefer taking a $700 credit to pick out their own rubber. Thoughts and advice please. On a side, if there are seriously interested buyers at this point, PM me. I'll be posting official listing once the house purchase is settled. She's a '08 135i coupe, manual, graphite, coral, sport, iPod, htd seats. 40K miles, VERY clean, always garage kept home and office. |

if you are going to sell privately I would put on whatever, but if you are looking to trade-in stick with OEM

That doesn't make sense... they might offer less on the trade-in, but I don't see how they'd actually refuse a trade-in if the tires are not OEM.

If it were a lease return you would need to return with OEM equivalent tires. But, on a trade in they will most likely give you even less then a typical trade in with good tires.

If its a lease.........head over to the wheel/tire/related items. Pretty much someone everyday is selling used run flats on cheap

I'd do this if you possibly can. It's more hassle but it eliminates any questions. I would think having non-matching tires front to rear would be a red flag for a potential buyer, especially if two are run flat and two aren't.

Thanks guys. I'll hunt through the tire/wheel section for a lightly used set of rears. I would never run unmatched front/rear. A big no-no in general, but in a car this communicative it would be a handling disaster.
Doubt I'll be trading back to a BMW dealer, likely Audi or Subie and not sure they'll catch or ding me for non-RFT. It's rare if not impossible to find a CPO x-drive 3er with sport, manual, prem combo. I'll miss BMW ownership, only ever owned 4 cars, 3 of which were Bimmers. |

But, specifically to the question of non RFT's, what liability in a private sale, regarding not having RFT's? Running non RFT's on the car is not a liability as it doesn't alter the safety of the vehicle. In a lease, a returning owner has to comply with the agreement they signed when they leased, so no question there as to why it must have RFT's. But, in a private sale, I don't see any liability that a "sold as is" can't cure. |

All the reviews I've read indicate that the WRX and STI are the most civilized versions Subi has produced to date, even though overall performance has improved. The suspension tuning Subi did to these 2 cars seems exemplary. BMW needs to do this with the 1 series, and they SHOULD have done it with the N55. I'm not yet sold on the new look of the WRX/STI sedan though. The rear view is cool, but overall there are some unbalanced proportions. The hatch looks cool though. And, the new interior looks much better, in pictures at least, as I haven't seen or sat in one in person. Also, the WRX didn't get a new 6 speed as it should have, so it's still turning too high at cruising speed, and it shows in it's lackluster MPG ratings. A 6th gear would have helped. The STI retains it's 6 spd, but it's geared for performance, so it's MPG ratings aren't so great either. They could have done a true overdrive 6th for the WRX, and should have. |
