M-Sport wheel

On the way back from Jersey tonite I hit a big chunk of asphalt in the road. They're preparing to repave the roadway and are grinding the surface down to make room for the new layer. The road is open but its in bad shape. I hit this big lump tonite in the rain after a car in front kicked it into my way. The left front took a direct hit and immedietly the low tire icon flashed. I drove about 5 miles to a parking lot to take a look.

It was raining pretty hard and dark so I didnt examine it 100%. The tire is flat and cant see any obvious damage to the wheel. But from the direct hit and hard impact I'll bet its out of round now. Tomorrow I'll call my insurance and see what they say. Im going to see if I can put a claim in with the NY DOT and see if they'll eat it. Pothole damage can sometimes be claimed and I've heard in the past that this type of damage might be covered.

I hope it is. Wheel, tire, alignment, possible suspension damage. This might get costly. Who knows how much a front M sport wheel costs? And if anybody has had luck filing a similar claim I would appreciate any advice given. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about that, the 18" BMW rims are around $360 and change, check out the BMW Accessories site. I'm not sure whether you have the Bridgstones of the Dunlops but the front tire isn't nearly as bad as the rear. I've luckily haven't had to deal with any alignment or suspension issues on one of these things to date! Best of luck

Hey Frank. Thanks for the info. Just got off the phone with my Ins Co and they told me, if there were construction signs up than then theres nothing I can do about it. Im likly going to have to eat it. Im not fully convinced on that. I'll see what else I can do. Im going to go look at it now and try to see the extent of the damage.

I can confirm that in ny you can't make a road hazzard claim in winter or in marked construction sites.

Idk what you have in texas. But in ny we have this stuff call snow and ice which destroys roads and makes potholes. The city can't get to all of them to fix them so they deny responsibility

It's instantaneous in winter. Water gets into pores and cracks in asphalt and concrete. The first day we have a big freeze the water freezes and expands into ice. This makes roads literally explode into potholes.

There is a similar effect on roads in summer as rebar and concrete have similar expansion properties until about 110 degrees. Once road temps get above that the rebar expands faster than the concrete causing explosive stress on roads that literally explode out into potholes...this one you should have experience with.

Are you claiming insurance, or trying to get the city to pay for it?

Sorry to hear about your rim. When I bent my m-wheel on a pothole in NJ the rim insurance wouldn't replace the rim because it was only bent and not cracked. I got the number of the guy that fixes rims for the BMW and Ferrari dealerships in NJ and gave him a call. He agreed to meet me somewhere other than the dealership and charged me 90 to straighten the rim. He did a great job and I don't feel any vibration through the steering wheel. If you want his number PM me.
If anything you can use the straightened rim for your spare. Hope this helps.

If you're on LI, you can go to Wheels America in Wyandanch and get your rim fixed.

The 261M's are real fragile rims too, I've bent 3 since November. One was bad enough to put a serious vibration through the steering wheel, but my suspension on that corner was fine.

Yea, I'm bring my 261M's to them tomorrow or Saturday after I get my new shoes on this afternoon. I never thought I'd put those gorgeous rims on winter tire duty, but here we are.

Just got back from Competion BMW in Smithtown. Tire was ruptured at the bead and up the sidewall, wheel OK(mounted new tire and high speed balanced), alignment out and 4 wheel alignment done. Total damage............$577 out the door. Crappy day but could have been worse if damaged wheel and suspension parts. Got to tell myself, the glass is half full. I looked into it further and NY construction sites are exempt from damage claims. If you're in LI in Suffolk avoid the NSP(E of Deer Park Ave) at all costs! We saw 2 other cars on the grass with flatbeds loading them up from damage. I cant believe the wheel wasnt damaged, it was a hell of an impact. Thanks for all the replys and advice.

Glad to hear that everything worked out well, those rims can take quite a bit of abuse!

This is why my car sleeps in for winter. It sucks as do alot of roads in the tristate but if I lose a fragile RFT performance tire and/or wheel I'll pay the piper and move on w/life.

New shoes eh? Pretell what are they? And my 264s have gone through two ny winters and they've done pretty well. A bit of curb rash, but I blame my dad for that because he did it.
