AT vs. MT axle differences?

It looks like the OE rear axles have different part numbers for manual and auto cars.

I have found some aftermarket GKN/Lobro axles, but only found the automatic trans. versions for sale.

Anyone know if they're interchangeable and/or what the difference is please?

thank you

Pretty sure length is different. Also rear different are different between auot(small) and manual(big). Alxes are not interchable unless u also replace with an auto diff.(small)

So you have physically tried to swap these axles? I believe the only difference is the thickness MT will be a little thicker than AT. If there was a drastic difference between AT and MT why is you can take an M3 diff and it's a complete bolt on? Misinformation all over the place

So you bolt on a m3 diff with both auto and mt stock 135 axles?

I can tell you. On realoem. Both auto amd mt axles are same diameter(but do not have info on lenght). If you resreach enough, you will find that the dimensions are different between the auto and mt diff. Both car has same subframe, suspensions, wheel bearings, etc. The different would be in the axles amd the diff itself.

Next time do more reading before trying to be smart.

http://www.vacmotorsports.com/news/3...483338466.html

Here they talked about the diff housing size.

If you are saying there is no "drastic" difference. Why are alxes label as auto or mt from bmw as wel as aftermarkent company? But hey, if u want to chance it and put incorrect lenght axles in your car then go for it.

No you don’t bolt on m3 diff with 135 axles lmao you use m3 axles. Yup you’re right desk jockey I’ll continue to read since I don’t know anything.

I do more than read desk jockey I have plenty of friends who have done the m3 diff swap on the 135 if there was difference it wldnt fit. Keep reading or better yet get out from behind the desk and do some wrenching and you will find out quickly how bmw built these cars with identical parts. But what do I know I have only done a manual swap and the m3 diff swap. But I’ll take your advice and continue to read the diff housing size doesn’t mean shit the they sit in exactly the same location the axles are different thickness and that’s it. The same m3 diff also fits the 335 smdh

Thank you for proofing yourself wrong. Axles are not interchangeable between diff. Rather it be betweem m vs non m or auto vs mt.

This is the exact reason why you need to use m3 axles with the m3 diff. Coz the dimensions of the diff are different. Auto diff. Goes with auto axles. Mt diff. Goes with mt axles. Simple. Just because you can install a m3 diff onto a non m subframe does not mean the diff are the same size. Everything else like subframe, knuckle, wheel bearings, etc are all identical. (Other then some suspensions amrs between the m and non m) but we are talking about the difference between auto and mt

Btw. I was bmw tech for 7.5yr untill 2011 before i switch to a different dealer. So yes. I been wrenching for a little while now

So it would be nice for you to stop giving mis informations.

Knuckles are not the same between M and non M, nor are the wheels hubs.

But the point here is between auto amd mt.....he is the only one here all of a sudden bring up the m\non m diff swap

You can fit the same axles coming from a M3 vehicle to AT or MT 135 if there was such a difference between AT and MT 135 axles the M3 axles would only fit one or the other.

You can fit M3 axles in 135i hubs, not sure you can fit 135i axles in M3 hubs, you probably would need a spacer or something like that.
Even if you could why would you want to ?

Well you need better eyes it's a direct swap m3 axles into 135, wow you guys are something else. Why would you want to lol? because the axles on an M3 are considerably thicker and the M3 diff is an LSD but who needs and LSD and thicker axles: confused2

M and non M subframes are same size. M diff with M axles will fit non M subframe. Non M diff with non M axles will fit M subframe. All M diff are same size 210mm. All M axles are same size. All non M MT diff are same size 215mm. Non M AT diff could be either 188mm or 215mm depending on build year. So the axles on non M AT would vary. All non M diffs that are 215mm use same axles. Is this clear and correct enough?

How about 128i vs. 135i differences?

I will be connecting a manual 128i diff to 135i rear bearing carriers. Assuming I'll need 135i manual trans axles, right?

thank you!
