125/8i Y Pipe

Hi all,

Has anyone replaced the mid-section resonator with a Y pipe?

View post on imgur.com

Want to know roughly what it would be like before I go ahead!

Planning on getting the 135i(N55) back box too afterwards.

Thanks

Kuuzu

Super Sprint has a Y pipe that they sell, and it's on sale. One of the member's chris82 has it, and speaks highly of it.

I have my resonator deleted with a y pipe and I have a 135i muffler on my 128i. Once its warmed up and in sports mode, it sounds great but it isn't loud enough for me. I'm 19 so I'd like my car a little louder. Planning on getting my muffler deleted.

I don't have any videos right now but I might record some when I have time. The step up is a great way to make your car louder without it droning.

If you want volume and crackle/pop, do secondary cat delete PLUS resonator delete, followed by a 135i muffler.

The setup mentioned above does not sound like a modern BMW... (Could be a good or bad, depending on your preference) but very similar to older, E36 supersprint setup.

I did this to my Euro 130i (E81).

Here in Europe we don't have the secondary cats, so I went resonator delete (modified the stock one) + 135i N54 muffler / backbox.

Sound is really really great. Pops/crackle when releasing throttle, plus louder sound when acceleration. Overall, it just sound louder and a little bit more agressive, and on the other hand, if you just cruise around in a normal way, is still acceptable, almost no drone at highway, etc.

If I were you, I'd definitely go for: secondary cats delete, resonator delete (modified or YPipe), 135i N54/N55 muffler.
You could also use 135i N55 resonator and modify it to be like the BMW Performance (easy), and it will be like an Y Pipe.

you will get the best sound by keeping the resonator

"Best" sound depending on what you want.

And no, I personally do not like ricey fart cans either.

You tend to always say resonator delete will make a car sound like shit but its case by cases, so let's not generalize here.

I agree. But for our cars in particular, with the absolutely brilliant factory designed resonator, why the hell would you want to remove that? You’d have to be insane. The res improves turbulent exhaust flow which is good for the engine while smoothing out the sound, getting rid of drone and rasp while tuning the exhaust more to sound how the engineers thought this engine should sound and let me tell you, they did a hell of a job with this resonator that everyone’s just cutting out. I’ve compared resonator vs no resonator on the n52 engine (n54 and n52 have almost the same resonator) and the difference is noticeable, you guys should try it yourselves.

But of course just like to mentioned to each their own. If you want an untuned exhaust note with drone then go ahead.

The general rule is that you want either a resonator or x-pipe. You lose 2-4ft/lb if you don’t have one or the other. That’s means you should NOT replace your resonator wth a y-pipe like the OP asked.

My car has a muffler delete and resonator delete now and it sounds great, but still not loud enough. Planning on removing the secondary cats soon and see how it sounds.

The setup you mentioned is my favorite, it's one of the best sounds I've heard on this car. It's inexpensive as well; you can buy the Supersprint cat delete pipes and the Y pipe for the price of the BMW Performance muffler. And you can pick up a stock 135i muffler for $50. If you have a lift, you could probably do the install yourself as everything will fit together perfectly with only part of the pipe on the 135 muffler needing to be cut.

Maybe all of the above you've mentioned applies to your 528i slushbox but please don't generalize that any N52/51 BMWs will sound like shit, will drone, will sound raspy-.. with resonator delete.

As above poster mentioned, 2ndary delete + resonator delete paired with 135i back box is one of the most popular combo for this platform of cars with N52/N51s.. it will not add *drone* like you've mentioned and I can comment on this because I have the exact setup mentioned above. So in another word, "First hand feedback as an owner".
