What really happens when the HPFP dies?
Will it leave me stranded? Can I limp back home after waiting? What are some indications that the pump has died other than it will not start? Have they failed while the car is in motion? The reason I am asking is that I have been exhibiting some of the characteristics associated with the fuel pump failure and I am due to make a pretty good road trip in the next couple of months. According to my good friend Murphy, the pump will die when it is most inconvenient and I don't want to get stranded somewhere with no help in sight.

Carrying the book won't help
I took delivery in Italy and have been driving here for the past 3 months. I am due to ship it in April back to the States but have to drive several hundred miles in order to drop it off in northern Italy. My fear is that somewhere a long way from home...pump fails. Ouch.

Mine had some warning signs a few weeks prior. Decreased power. The day of, I felt extreme lag when accelerating at highway speeds. It died the night before a 250 mile trip to WV mountains. Thank god it didn't die 12 hours later. Limp mode could barely handle freeway traffic let alone the 40 degree inclined switchbacks on my route. Some people have noted a possible correlation with failures and longer trips.
It's an awful feeling, that your ~$45K car could fail you at any time. Surprising so many of us have experienced problems...and still no recall. Mine wasn't replaced but merely reprogrammed. I had 13,000 on the clock when it happened. It's never been tracked or modded. I don't push it that hard, miles are from combo of heavy traffic and long expressway trips. |

Will it need to be towed or will it make it on it's own?
Also, what sort of fault display is shown when the pump fails? Has anyone had their pump replaced w/o a fault but exhibiting long starts? I just want to know what BMW will do. Thanks.

I got stranded... in the middle of town, thankfully But yeah, engine kinda acted like I had ran out of gas. No real warning either. Just a bit of a slow crank on the day it died, but nothing prior to that. Called BMW Assist, got towed to the local dealer withing 30 mins. Got the car back later that same day.

Went to the dealer today
My service engine soon light came on after a long cranking. I called the dealer and they agreed to see me ASAP. On the way to the dealer, the light went out...go figure. Anyway, the dealer checked diagnostics and found nothing. They agreed to replace the pump and fuel filter which is good news. Hopefully they know what the hell they are doing...not too many 135i's running around Sicily.

i guess even the 09s with the latest and 'greatest' HPFP is susceptible to immature failure too huh. How many miles do you have on your car right now?

Damn it's sad to think that BMW is having such a problem with these pumps that people are actually afraid of them.
I simply can not believe that they've let this go on this long without dealing with it properly (meaning a recall to replace all the bad pumps that are out there). |

^^^ this is getting ridiculous to the point of absolutely absurd that there isn't a recall. My only guess is that they don't have a lasting solution to the problem yet, and that they don't want to issue to recalls for the same item when the next batch fails-although the new pumps were supposed to be reliable... I don't see why it is so hard to develop a working hpfp, yes it's direct injection but it can't be that hard for a car company to either design a lasting part or to find another company that does.

Update on HPFP
OK, here we go. The dealer agreed to replace the pump and fuel filter based on what I was saying without having the pump fail completely. The car was ready the next day so I picked it up. I was nearly out of gas so filled up at the nearest station. When I started it up after filling up, the starter cranked for about 5-6 seconds then to my dismay, the Service Engine Soon light came on again. After 6 normal starts the light disappeared and everything seemed ok. The next day, I drove it to work. I had to go to an appointment and attemped to start it and it wouldn't stay running. I was experiencing long cranking after which it would fire up but then it would just die. After trying around 10 times, the CEL came on. I had to have the car towed to the dealer. The dealer thought I might had gotten some bad gas (common in Italy) but agreed to check it out. They called me the next day and said it was ready. As I was going to pick it up, I saw my car screaming by me going the other direction (guess they had to test drive it). I will have my dealer rep who speaks Italian translate what the actual problem was and get back to all. Needless to say, quite disappointing overall.

i took my car in to the dealership to get an update since my widows where not going up as they should .... and i had a rough idle ..... now that they completed the update I felt like the car had a boost of power .... then the next day on I have been having a hard time starting the car ..... long repetitive cranks then it turns on ..... not like the fraction of a second it used to .... is it possible that my pump is on the way out ???? let me know .... i rather not get stuck!
