Thanks in advance, so I can get the order in ASAP!
More sidewall is better for winter. 17" is the better option since it provides more protection. 205's won't fit the 8" wheel. You'll want to use 215/45/17 or 225/45/17 on the 8" width.

ok, not the best, but all I can do for now. Car is very dirty...dealer didn't wash it :iono:

rides better IMO too - I doubt very much I'll go back to stock RFT. Plus I feel much easier knowing I have a bit more rubber protecting the rim.

Gill, can you guys get BMW rims?

I went with the Gill set up:
225/45/17 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60
17x8" Sport Edition KM-11

called him to order on Monday, got them Wednesday morning, installed them today. Wheels look relatively nice for the cheapie option.

One question I have that i couldn't find answered here is how many miles is it reasonable to expect the tread on these to last? Driving today, i felt the need to baby them.

Generally between what temps are winter tires good until they start feeling soft??

Just trying to see if it's worth it where I am located to pick them up... we have already had some sub 30 degree nights and my traction control kicks on constantly with the stock RFT's.... definitely feels like they are getting really hard in the cold weather!

The stock run flats should really be taken off when the temps are consistently below 40 degrees. They lose a lot of adhesion below this barrier.

They work very well. They fall just short of the best in class but they do a fine job.

Gil,
The Blizzak LM-25s are out of stock until mid-Dec but the Dunlops SPs are still available. Would you recommend waiting for the blizzaks or are the Dunlops a comparable/better option? Would it really make a difference going with separate rims vs using my stock rims other than the hassle of continuous mounting/remounting costs?

The Dunlop 3D/M3 is very comparable/equal to the blizzaks. No reason to wait if you have one of those options available.

New rims and tires mainly eliminate the hassle/cost of switching. The performance is not worlds better if you're comparing with the same tires size to size. However, there are more aggressive snow tire options available in 17" than 18" if you're searching for the best of the best on snow/ice.

I'm including step by step instructions to navigate our winter product screens and all the useful tips I can think of to help you make your choice. I will be adding to this throughout the season.

Here we go:

Viewing/Ordering winter product - Step by step!

1. Click the Tire Rack "Shop Now" link at the top of the page.
2. Select your "Make" and "Year" and click "go."
3. Select your "Model" and click "go."
4. Select "Winter." (Very important)

Now you can go a number of ways:

1. Build package - from here you select a tire first then it let's you pick a wheel to combine with the tire.
2. Tires only - click one of the preferred sizes or select the "custom size" link.

*If you want to look at wheels first click "build package" then click "skip to wheels" located all the way to the right of the page immediately above the thick, red, dividing line labeled "Recommended sizes." If you select wheels from here it will immediately take you to tire selections.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Here is a list of wheels that will take the BMW center caps:
Sport Edition A7
Sport Edition F10
Sport Edition KM11
Volk RE30 (with modification)
Breyton GTS-R
ASA AR1- see below in regards to machined lip
ASA AR2- see below in regards to machined face

* Some of you may wonder why some of our wheels are not listed as working for winter. This mostly happens due to the finish on that wheel. Machined lips or faces on wheels don't hold up as well when exposed to salt, etc....You should choose these only if you are willing to put the extra work into keeping the elements off them. Be cautious.

* Everyone asks me, "Gill, what's the best winter tire?" Well, here you go. The Michelin Xi2 and the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 are the best studless ice and snow tires. Testing has proven this to be fact. The Dunlop Winter Sport M3/3D and the Blizzak LM22/25 are the best high speed rated winter options. They consistently outperform competitors. (Please remember, we are splitting hairs here. All the options are great but, since you asked, these are the best of the best.)

* Our "Preferred Package" for any given vehicle represents value. It's chosen because it offers a large "bang for the buck." It offers a solid choice for someone who might not want to put hours into researching for themselves. It's simply one of the many options that work for a vehicle.

* Don't procrastinate! The best priced product (wheels especially) WILL sell out first. It's been proven year after year. Full selections can rarely be expected after Oct/Nov. Things get sketchy after that.

*If you decide to place an online order with TireRack.com please do so via the "shop now" link at the top of the page. Doing so directly supports 1addicts.com. Referencing my name ("Gill") on your online orders also ensures the personal service you deserve - and rewards me for helping to make this the best possible experience for you.

*If you prefer phone to online shopping, call me! 877-522-8473 x620 is my direct line.
I will be handling a very high volume of calls during the months of October, November and December but I hope, and expect, that you will call me directly for any business you have with the Tire Rack. I love talking about our cars and it is a lot easier to help you via phone during this time of the year. When you call you may get my voice mail. Leave me a message mentioning you are from "1addicts.com" and you will be my next call back. I will not know you called if you don't leave a message! Phone conversations will yield much faster results at this time of the year.

* I will be keeping an eye on the board and PM's during this time. If you have questions specifically for me, please address them to me in the title of the post. I will be short on free time to dig through posts looking for someone who might need something.

* The answers to literally 100's of questions will eventually be contained within this thread. Please take the time to scour it. I'm sure many will find their questions already having answers within.
Hi Gil
I have SE A7 on my 06 330i with 225/45/17 tires on them, I know from our previous conversation that the wheel wouldn't fit due to the offset, so I was wondering if the TPMS and the tires would fit if i purchased a set of the KM 11 wheels?

I was thinking about putting 225/45/17 Dunlop Winter Sports on my stock 135i OEM wheels 17x7's, but the SA at the dealership said it wouldn't be a good idea (no reason why), but that's what he told me. Based on everyone's comments they will fit so that shouldn't be an issue, I was thinking about selling the 225/45's and getting 205/50/17's instead (recomended by bmw)so my question is how do the 225/45/17's handle, both steering response and handling?

Dammit! Only if I read this thread BEFORE I ordered off Tire Rack. Now Gill doesn't get that reward that he deserves... maybe there's still time!

Gill, Here's my order number: 7212514. I ordered some tires yesterday. If it's not too late, maybe you can do something with that and hopefully get something good out of it.

Both sizes are fine on that size wheel and both will handle fine for winter purposes.
