The N54 was already established and more was known about it. I'm sure someone at the M Division had done something with an N54 at some point.

Me either! I surmise that the M division went with the N54 in the 1M because it was the more tunable motor and it better accomplished the M division's objectives, especially considering the overboost feature the 1M has for short bursts of extra power. Too bad the M division just didn't give it more power all the time. Of course 1M owners can always purchase an aftermarket tune like many of the rest of us N54 1 owners have.

more likely that the M division had already further developed the N54 so they used that for the 1M. If they had more time they would have put the N55 in the 1M. 'overboost' can be developed on any turbocharged engine...

If a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass when it hopped. LOL!

? What did they develop? A flywheel? It's the same engine. There was a lot of talk early on that the turbos were bigger and it had beefed up engine parts but from what I read that was incorrect. The engine is tuned differently. I would think if M wanted to use the N55 there is adequate talent to develop a tune for it.

N55 or N54

Hello, new to BMW. Just bought a 2012 135i, not sure which engine it has. N55 or N54? Can one tell by just looking at the engine? Also I am curious about the JB4 tune. Anybody with info would be appreciated.

N55, skip JB4 and go straight to the MHD flash.

The engine internals are the same except the N54 has a forged crank. You'll notice the M235/240 & M2 all have a forged crank.

You can read about the difference between a single scroll and twin here:

http://dsportmag.com/the-tech/twin-s...-great-divide/

How much difference does the twin in the N54 make over the N55? Good luck in figuring that one out.

Not enough for me to put up with the added maintenance & repair. It all depends on what your goals are with the car.
