Over one week since the announcement, but the bmwusa.com website still says there's no recall on my 2012...
No news is good news?

I would be surprised if they did. I don't think they have even started to send out mail yet to the owners to notify them of this recall.
I was told all that has been done thus far is that BMW notified NHTSA of the recall...and that's it (as far as i know). |

No, it's because BMW hasn't even started the official recall yet, just made the general announcement. |

I had to take my car in last Monday for limp mode... I brought this up asking to get it done because warranty was up at 50k (I had 48.7k) and dealer said they hadn't heard much about it but that techs coming back from training were mentioning it.
After working on my car a while, my VANOS bolt had sheared off completely. They were looking for bolt head and were to the point that they removed the oil pan (however it was found elsewhere--not in engine) I still don't have it back yet so I can't comment on the work done but at 48,700 miles my exhaust cam shaft was what threw the code and had the broken bolt. |

Curious what your production date was? Also what happened, I mean how did the limp mode come about. WOT? Cold start out of the blue?

Limp mode popped up on the way home from work. accelerating from a stop after a light turned green. Didn't feel the drastic pull/rev limiter hit...just the loss of boost was noticeable, vehicle still revved as high as 3k (didn't push any further, note that revving was much slower than normal due to boost cutting out). My diagnosis process broken down 1) switch JB4 maps from 5 to 1. 2) switch JB4 maps from 1 to 0. 3) clear code using steering wheel inputs from JB4 4) shut car off. 5) start car--no code; continued driving 6) built confidence in accelerating (like 25mph to 45mph ~55%-60% throttle to floor); code re-appeared. 7) scanned car and found "exhaust cam shaft bank 2 error" 8) took JB4 out 9) car started without code... idled fine, so I hammered it through the gears. No codes. Thought I fixed issue. Go inside and celebrate my awesomeness with a beer 10) next morning, start car... limp mode before leaving driveway. 11) take to dealer |

Oh man, I think mine may have broken. My car stalled but I thought it was the software problem others were having with the N55. I took it in and had the new software installed but it is still acting funny and cutting all power at times. I hope there is no damage. I guess I am happy they are going to fix it. I have read of those VENOS bolt sheering off on other models and hoped it would not happen to me. If BMW is willing to fix it on their dime I guess I should be happy with that. On some other models it seams that bolt head can fall places you don't want it to be and cause major problems. One thing I have to give BMW credit for is fixing their major screw ups such as this, the high pressure fuel pump, wastegate rattle, or software related throttle response problems. Some companies would want to pretend they never happened but BMW has done right by its customers in my opinion by owning up to it and extending warrantees beyond when they needed to.

Hope this is handled better than the HPFP recall. I had my 2009 135i scheduled for the recall and BMW would not let my dealer do the work until the HPFP actually failed. In a fit of anger I traded that car in on an Audi A5, which I hated and got my current 135i 15 months later (very understanding wife). Wonder if the warranty will be extended for the VANOS bolts like it was for the HPFP?

#1 - send out extended warranty letters on VANOS issues to owners, while waiting for issues to crop up. #2 - send out recall letter for owners to come in for an inspection and possible repair. If nothing is found, I hope the extended warranty will still be applicable.

Picked up my car from the dealer last night. Said that they had issues looking for bolt head but that it was found externally with regard to the engine so no catastrophic damage occurred. They are still waiting for actual recall notifications from BMWUSA. I don't currently have work order sheet with me but I will upload that to this thread when I get home tonight so the exact work done can be viewed.
no issues with car performance (JB4 still out) or responsiveness as of now. I think it was a successful repair job |

More Details are out
" BMW of North America is recalling 156,137 2010-'11 vehicles, including the BMW 335i sedan, because loose bolts could lead to engine stall.
The recall is expected to begin in May. In addition, owners of approximately 170,172 2010-'12 BMW vehicles equipped with inline six-cylinder engines not covered by the recall will receive an extended warranty to address this condition. " |

I just double checked my VIN on that....the system is still not updated...
It says on the bottom: "Please allow up to 30 days after completion of a recall for this data to be updated." So it probably won't be fully underway till after May i would imagine. |
