Michelin PSS and 1M
So, I bought a set of OE size Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they arrived yesterday. I installed them today. I thought I would share my impressions time to time like first impressions, in a rainy day, track (if that happens here) etc.
First of all, there was nothing really wrong with the PS2s, in fact I found them better than I expected but I also felt that there might be room for improvement especially considering ride comfort and traction issues. Since I use my car as a daily drive and the roads here is really problematic (like cobblestones etc.) with usually heavy and unpredictable traffic I keep the car mostly in DSC on mod, and occasionaly MDM. So I know how often the DSC intervenes even with half throttle. I will see if the PSS will be a better DD, I hope so. The relatively short drive from tire shop to home I already felt the car was different, very planted yet smoother. My expectation is to increase the overall comfort and security (at wet) while having at least the same degree of dry handling performance. We will see. I will keep my PS2s as a reserve cause the rears here is almost impossible to find and I might use them during a performance driving course I am planning to have soon after the 2000km. oil change. Eventually, I think most 1M users will switch to PSS since it just feels like the natural thing to do (the 1M should be the first new M car to have them as standart but it did not happen) and PS2s are already discontinued here, US and Europe might be the same. Anyone who already drives the PSS or some other instead of the PS2s please pop in and share your impressions. I will write more soon on this when I have a better idea of the differences between the old and new Pilots. |

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of getting the PSS as replacements in the future. I also like that it has a higher treadwear rating than the PS2.

My summer wheels are lying in the basement with a fresh set of PSS mounted
I have had no chance to drive them yet as we have winter over here. Hopefully the winter doesn't last too long this year. |

Additional observation: Today, getting out from my garage (there is a steep climb of 10-15 meters) the DSC did not flash. This is the first time since I bought the car, even with the lightest possible throttle in the first gear it always blinked with PS2s. All the way to work, I did my common routine, almost exact same lines, gears and speeds to see what is going on: definetely smoother ride, less noise and DSC again was not blinking, not even once. One quick stop (I was late to brake) I noticed slightly more distance needed for a complete stop but it is hard to tell from that kind of emergency stop plus tire break-in is needed especially for good braking.
This is practically 0 km. tires, they are supposedly not even performing properly yet. In fact, I need to check the pressures (I always check it again after swapping tires, they always screw it at the workshops) in the afternoon and continue testing around my usual roads. If it rains I will get out for a spin even if I am at work |

ozinaldo - give your new PSS tires some time to "break in". I noticed a big difference after about 500kms of driving. Especially under braking... when the tires are new... they are quite "greasey" and almost dagnerous to drive on. After some miles(kms) they will feel GREAT! Really.

Thanks for your review, very interested too as my BSM is also a daily drive and occasionnal trackday. Pleased to hear that the DSC did not flash that much with the PSS !! I'll keep an eye on your thread...

Looking forward to heavy 1st and 2nd gear acceleration impressions. My car in MDM + sport mode lights up the tires in 1st gear like they are made out of paper, and I only have 3300 miles on the clock. A quick shift to 2nd and they will continue to spin, and yet another quick shift to 3rd and they will definitely chirp. Maybe the recent lower temperatures here are not helping - last night temperatures dropped into the 30's here in Jacksonville, FL.

Interesting. I wonder what is the widest I can use for rear tires without compromising handling and making sure no rubbing occurs during heavy handling.

I think someone said you could go with 295 on the rear without rubbing...might be overkill though.

The tires are still in the break-in period and feeling very new but I couldn't help myself and took them for a mountain road drive (climbing to the first row of the Andes just outskirts of Santiago); was a beautiful sunny day and nice road with decent surface. Even with such low milage on them the tires performed superbly, more stable and grippy then the original PS2s. Around the twisties I left the car mostly in the 3rd gear and with MDM on or DSC on to see different reactions (I am not closing DSC totally off on new roads plus the car also is still in the break-in period, so unless I push over 5500 rpm I feel that is not necessary anyway).
As always, it was difficult to provoke any DSC intervention with these tires under "normal" use, I felt like I am so far away than the limits of the tires. If I go to that same road again I know I can go faster without any real risk or concern. Also I am choosing the horribly irregular cobblestone streets near home sometimes and any 90 degree turns etc. on them even at the lowest possible speeds were resulting with DSC jumping in before, not anymore. I am hoping to take the car for a trip outside the city soon to finish the break-in and also see how they behave on highway conditions and with higher speeds. |

Producer claims a very significant increase on treadwear (300 against PS2's 220 if I remember correctly) but it is yet to be experienced by owners who switch from one to another, that is not going to be me anyway because I used my PS2s less than 1000 kms. on the 1M. They are my reserve set now.
You can check the reviews section on the tyre rack website, after selecting the PSS main page; lots of user reviews there including the ones who switch from PS2 with similar sports cars. |

Yes, almost 37% (36.36 to be precise) increase. If it is not just a number on the rubber, it is a very serious gain especially thinking that there are no performance areas immune from progress in comparison with the PS2.

PSS is a no brainer IMO. Better tire at a cheaper price. |

The extra life expected will depend entirely on usage. In my case (on my R32, not my 1M), the PSS lasted more than 50% longer than the PS2. I pushed the tires pretty hard, and I believe the PS2 is susceptible to dramatically increased wear when "over the limit" or overheated, where the PSS isn't as much.
It will be interesting to see on the 1M if this holds true- the compound and construction for the BMW spec PS2 used on the 1M is different than the average PS2. I feel like the M3/ BMW spec tires subjectively have particularly poor cool weather performance vs the standard PS2 compound, for example... I expect that Michelin will make a 1M/ M3 spec version of the PSS. That will be the tire to have when it comes out, but I'll bet the regular PSS is much better than the current PS2.
