Yes. Borrowed a friends aluminum bonnet to shave 10kgs. I saw you car but my lane was super long and only saw your car as I was about to race.

Are they like the 'speed holes' that Homer Simpson put in his bonnet.

Just a stock bonnet without scoops/vents fitted because that is how I got it. If they were speed holes, they seemed to work!!

What a monster 60' time! Does seem there is a ten second pass in the car, pity it's not a 135!

I thought he went forced induction to pull out those numbers. Very impressive. I looked into Zeds seriously a while back, I think they are great cars but shame they are NA which limits their modding potential. 9.5k isn't small money either, any reason why he didn't go for the twin/turbo setup which make a lot more power? 303kw is very respectable though but he could have had GTR power

Private track day at Sydney Dragway, Sunday 18th September 2011.

I headed out to WSID with Fly135 (Jason) on Sunday to take part in a private track day organised by the Skyline Australia club. Great club, really well organised day.

The weather was not kind, being quite humid and very hot (first day over 30 degrees in Sydney this year!), but the skies stayed blue. The Density Altitude was 2148 feet. Not so good.

This is the first time I've taken my 135 to the drag strip and I was keen to get some baseline information. The race scales tell me my raceweight (me in car) is 1619 kgs (3569 lbs). Not too bad considering it was full weight (nothing removed) plus a rollcage. I had about 1/8th tank of fuel.

From my extensive dyno work at Advan Performance I know the car is making ~ 394 rwhp. My performance modifications include PROcede Rev 3 tune, AR downpipes and Vishnu PWM methanol kit.

The car is running the stock runflats on stock wheels, with stock diff (no LSD). I wanted to see what I could do with runflats at the drag strip, knowing that heavy car, relatively high horsepower, manual tranny and runflats aren't a recipe for world shattering ETs!

I also wanted to experiment with the PROcede Rev 3 launch control features. These include a flat shift function as well as a two step/antilag function. Testing at Advan Performance showed that my car will build ~ 6 psi of boost when the two step is set to 4500 RPM. Higher RPM would see the boost increased, perhaps to ~ 9 psi at a higher setting.

Kenny's pass journal for WSID track day

As always I too a pocket notebook and analysed each pass before deciding on a plan of attack for the next pass. After getting home I entered the information into a Pass Journal to better analyse what the 135 wants in order to optimise the short time, ET and Trap Speed.

Kenny's Pass Journal for Sunday.

Thanks for the update Kenny. Great effort considering your still running the open diff and run craps. I expected the mph to be slightly higher though.

Analysis of passes.

Some analysis of the passes, both at the track and later on at home revealed some information.

On that day with DA of 2148', the trap speed was consistent at 113.x MPH, with a best of 114.11 MPH. Knowing the car's raceweight of 3569 lbs and trap speed of 113.x MPH we know how much power it makes on the big black dyno on that day.

Experience soon showed that the twostep/antilag function of PROcede Rev 3 cannot be exploited with runflats. The rubber simply cannot hold any amount of boost from the hit. After three attempts (decreasing the twostep RPM limit) I turned this fucntion off for the remainder of the day.

This is an exciting prospect for those with manual transmissions who have good street radials or even drag radials. With this sort of much better rubber the twostep function will come into it's own. Making 6-9 psi of boost on the hit will see awesome short times (and therefore ETs) once the drag radials hold the hit.

The PROcede Rev 3 flatshift function worked a treat. Those passes where I did not use flatshift compared to the passes where I did show that the car clearly profits from the function. The throttle does not close between shifts and the half track and trap speeds are higher. The timers at each interval also show that flatshift is great for your ET too.

I can wholeheartedly recommend PROcede Rev 3 flatshift/twostep (Launch Control) for any 135 manual transmission owners who want to go drag racing.

Having turned off the twostep I then experimented by varying my launch RPMs manually. After each pass I would note the resulting short time of the car and how it got out of the hole. Surprisingly even with stock runflats the optimum launch RPMs were at 5000 RPM. It took until 5500 RPM until the covers blew off at the hit.

When you consider how narrow and how hard runflats are, then I was surprised that the car wanted 5000 RPM to launch.

Best Timeslip of the day.

The best ET was 12.814 with a 2.101 short time. The best trap speed was 114.11 MPH with half track 89.78 MPH.

Best Timeslip from Sunday.

Kenny you sure you needed to get the car off the line at 5000rpm? It sounds like that's way too high. How much wheelspin did you get? I would have experimented with some softer launching. How did you launch the car to get the 2.1 short time?

Vinney, the trap speed seems consistent with all the other 135s with tune/FBO/methanol. Take a look at the standings on page 1.

Probably would have been a bit higher without the hot weather but I'm not unhappy with it.

Vinney take a closer look at my pass journal, all the information is in there in detail. I started at 2000 RPM, then went to 3000 .. then 4000 .. then 5000 .. then 5500. The best launch was at 5000 RPM.

I am sure I could get that short time down with further practice on the runflats, but would be over the moon if I managed a 1.9x. It's a challenge with a clutch and runflats I can tell you!

However having said that I'm not interested in trying to get the ultimate short time with runflats. Next time I'll use drag radials so I can exploit the twostep and get out of the hole under boost. The short time and ET will tumble with better rubber.

It's great to see this kind of info Kenny. Your on target it's just the short time as you know that needs work. I'm sure the runflats are really taking their toll. 40psi in the tires?? Why not drop the pressure a little. The temps were against you also as it was midday. We all know your car is capable of running a very low 12 second pass with proper rubber. At the end of the day 12.8 is a fast daily driver. Let me know if you want me to show you how to get a good 60' Sorry I had to throw that in.

Great to see Kenny, and thanks for putting up all your info!

I too am surprised to see you launch at such a high rpm. Is that with dumping the clutch or slipping? I would have thought dumping it would see nothing but wheelspin, just like you found out with the flat shifting on the Procede.

ps- You have an aftermarket FMIC too?

Thanks Edwin, I've been drag racing for some time now and have developed a few of my own tools. Always happy to share because I think drag racing is great fun no matter what car you drive. It's a real challenge!
