Yepp - the European 325i has a 2,5 L engine.
I suppose that USA got 3.0 L becasuse of the fact that more people in the US drive automatics and need more low-end grunt. |

If you want more Hp. for you 325i, you need to wait for Dinan to come out with it's e90 parts.
Then get the engine software, cold air intake, and a freeflow exhaust. The freeflow exhaust and the engine software are the main differences between the 325 and the 330 |

First they said it will be at least another year before anything is available. Secondly, regarding the variable intake on the 330: It is not something that can just be "replaced " with a Dinan cold air intake. There are other parts that work with it, such as a different intake manifold and adjusters that allow it to get the extra power. Thirdly, exhausts never add very much if anything;they are mostly for getting a nice engine growl. Both exhausts are the same on the 325 & the 330. This only leaves only the engine software for updating, but anyone like Jim Conforti or some of the others can make those, and everyone knows you need to make some other physical modification in order for the software to have any real effect on horsepower. We'll see.....maybe someone will come up with a completely different idea. Last edited by RichReg; 06-15-2005 at 07:11 PM.. |

I was told by my dealer that the difference between the 325 and 330 is the engine management software program and that the 330 has different headers on it and has a diff intake. otherwise, its pretty much the same. However i suspect inside the engine there is some diff stuff also.

Significant differences between the 325i/xi and 330i/xi engines are as follows:
•Whereas the 330i/xi engine has the 3-stage induction system, the 325i/xi unit has a single-stage intake manifold. •Engine software differs between the two versions. ------------ These are the difference between the two, described in the 'Production information booklet'. Refer to the 25th page. For the US models, of course.

Internally, the motors are identical... The 325 version is just tuned down via the computer. The 3-stage intake system is good for about 10 hp at most. Remember, that these engines have both valvetronic and double-vanos technology, which means that power output is directly connected to the software mappings of these systems. Theoretically, If they wanted too, they could have the motor put out only 100 horsepower. It's all in the software....

Any aftermarket tuner will tell you that software alone does very little unless it is accompanied by some other physical modification. My Dinan dealer says that newer BMW models have all of their engine software optimized from the factory, whereas with older models it used to be a different story. With today's advanced engine management systems, changes to ignition timing, etc., don't do much by themselves;;BMW doesn't usually leave much behind for improvement. That being said, I find it difficult to believe that a 3-Stage intake & different intake manifold account for only 10 hp, its probably closer to 25 or 30 WITH an update to the software.
