Pothole Fallout

I've got just over 9k on the stock GY Eagle LS2 run flats and then this happened yesterday. I didn't think I hit the pothole THAT hard and didn't even see it before I hit it.

Switching out both rears with PS/2 ZPs in a 225/45/R17 from Tire Rack. Anyone know if I'll be able to tell the different from the 205/50/R17s up front? The size difference seems pretty small...

Dealer quoted $25/tire for mounting. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Thoughts?

I'm looking forward to the extra grip. I was not a fan of the GYs.

While you may not notice a difference due to the small change in size, you are more likely to notice a difference due to mixing different tire types from front to rear.

Don't worry about it. Things can only improve!

Ontopic: that is serious damage to the tire from hitting a pothole! How deep was it?

Ditch the runflats!

I had to order a set of VMR's in a pinch a few years back, because after bringing car in for a set of new tires. Turns out I had bent two & CRACKED one of the OEM style 246's. I blame the rock hard run-flats transmitting all the impacts directly to the rim.

If you are willing to ditch the runflats, and considering you are from Texas. I highly recommend a set of sticky summer tires. Depending on your budget I like the Continental DW, and what I personally run Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Your grip and ride quality will increase with the upgrade.

I don't know how deep, I didn't ever see it. I was making a protected right and dumped it in the hole halfway around the bend. Maybe I'll see if I can find it tomorrow.

Thanks for the recommendation, sparkyblue. When I got the car and saw the all-seasons I considered switching them to PSS then and there, but alas I'm too chicken. I drive through a lot of construction zones on my way to work and, including some on the highway. Would hate to have a blow-out at 70mph.

I'm hoping they eventually make the PSS ZP in 17" sizes. 'Vettes can't have all the fun!

If you are replacing a pair, I would recommend replacing the other pair as well, whether it's with a RFT or a non-RFT all around. Many people have made the switch to conventional tires and are very happy with the outcome. Gotta think that we survived for many years without run flats, so you'll probably survive now as well. Just invest in something like AAA, or a plug kit with a small compressor.

You might want to check out the new michelin pilot sport a/s 3 tires as they are essentially an all-season version of the pilot super sports and also have pretty good treadwear life. Not sure what sizes they come in though in 17".

Got my PS/2 ZPs in today from Tire Rack via Mesquite, TX. Fast shipping was awesome, but still UPS ground-cheap. I'm looking forward to the extra grip.

Mounting tomorrow and hopefully will get a nice loaner if they're backed up.

Inside Out

So much for an easy dealer visit. They had the car for half the day because they were backed up, even wit my 9AM appointment and they still screwed it up. How hard can it be to mount two rear tires?! I didn't notice until 15 miles and 3 hours later when I go to leave work and decide to triple-check them. Sure enough, something looked fishy.

Made a trip back to the dealer 15 minutes before closing to drop the car off and got a piddly stripper 320i. Earlier loaner today was a fully loaded 328i.

Do note, the inside sidewalls say in about 6 different languages "inside" and the outside one says "outside". Not that it's not already obvious from the tread pattern.
