Need explanation on offsets!

Hi guys,

I've never really understood what offsets are. Can someone explain that to me?

Specifically, with VMR wheels, if I wanted to put 19x8.5 fronts and 19x9.5 rears with 1-series offsets (ET45) onto a 3-series, would they work? Would they look funny or stick out too far or need spacers?

Thanks for the help!
