I had this feature on my 2011 STI (and was thankfully able to turn it off...) and i find that the execution on the BMW is significantly better than that of the subaru. Its actually smooth and relatively unobtrusive where as the subaru would engage the brakes at times when i didnt want it to.

I have driven MTs for 10+ years and never intentionally use the hill assist, but i can see how it would be helpful to those who arent as smooth at it (ie my wife...).

I just enjoy it solely because in NY people pull RIGHT up to your back bumper and if you roll back half an inch while trying to leave you could risk tapping them. Plus it just makes life easier.
