Do we have hill assist or am I going nuts?
I noticed on the steep hills of San Francisco, my manual 135i seem to have a hill assistance feature. The split second it takes me to go from braking and engaging 1st, I notice that my car does not roll back at all. This is suprising since I'm on some decently steep hills not just moderate inclines.
So do we have some type hill assistance? :iono: |

the hill assist kicks in when you step on the breaks and then let go. in certain situations i noticed the car would roll back, but then i was told to just tap the breaks and it holds the car even after you let go of the breaks!

this news makes me happy that i will be sticking with the manual transmission when i order my 135 ^^. I was about to order to steptronic with paddles because i did not know that the 1 series had this feature. Good to know!

It's a great feature, but watch out! Don't think you are free to sit there for too long. The brakes will let go after a few seconds and the car will suddenly roll backwards.
You have been fairly warned.

It is only meant to hold for the time it takes to move your foot from brake to clutch. It can be annoying when you have to stick your nose out a little to see if traffic is coming your way, on a slight up-hill. If traffic is coming and it's not safe to proceed, hill assist keeps your nose out there a little longer than you might like.

After having driven sticks for over thirty years (and none with a hill holder feature) I was underwhelmed about it, but after having driven this car for awhile I really appreciate it. Kansas City is pretty hilly and this feature makes life easier. I just wonder if the transition to driving a car w/o a hill holder will result in embarrassment. ; -)

Ditto, I didn't think I would need it, but I really like having it now. Nice feature. My driveway is uphill to get to the road, so I (unconsciously) use it every day.

from my experience, it will hold the car if you are going up a hill only if you are in first and the clutch is in. If you are reversing up a hill it will only hold the car stationary if you have it in R and the clutch in.
if you need to quickly roll back can you not just bang it back into neutral??? |

It has nothing to do with the gear you are in . . . even in neutral, if you depress the clutch and let off the brake pedal, it will still hold you for 1.5ish secs . . . I know cause I play with it all the time . . . pressing the brakes right before it lets go.

If I remember correctly, Subarus used to have this feature as well (not sure if they still do). I too wish this feature could be disabled; this would place more control/responsibility in the hands of the driver. Also, I learned to drive standard in a fairly hilly area and there was always that sense of satisfaction from achieving zero rollback on a steep hill start. Now everyone will be able to do it with the new 1!
