If alarm goes off, can trunk be opened from inside?
Having a thought after hearing of car robberies where thiefs break window and then access trunk.
Will the trunk release button open the trunk if the car is locked and someone smashes the window (alarm equipped).

It, wait a few minutes then open the drivers door from the inside. This will trigger the alarm. Then try to open the trunk. You can lock the trunk via a switch in your glove box though. Reference your owners manual, it will tell you the specific details about what it does

Thanks. I'll try it later. Though if you can arm it from the glovebox, then you can un-arm it from the glovebox. Would that be disabled if the alarm goes off then?
I would think if the alarm is activated, trunk access would (should) be completely denied. Quote:

Should the police be getting involved...? Just kidding... Yes it can be unlocked via the glove box but it's not obvious the lock is there. Unless the thief knows BMWs they won't think to look. If you wanted to get really secure you could remove the fuse from the trunk release circuit. If you have a keyed trunk then you just access via key, or wire a dead mans switch to the circuit and hide it.

I live in SF, where smash and grab is rampant. Now I hear they smash and open the trunk and steal whatever's in there. If I have my computer with me, I always lock it in the trunk. Hence the worry.
I think having to lock the glovebox is an annoyance when I already purchased the alarm. IMO if the alarm goes off access to the trunk should be cut off. Anyway, still need to test it.

Relays are basically a device that allows one circuit to switch another on/off via electromagnet that physically moves a switch in the unit. When the siren is powered, the switch in the relay would get thrown and cut power to the trunk unlock/lock circuit. Curious what your tests reveal, keep us in the loop

if the switch is in the glovebox, you can use your key to lock the glove box.
so someone would have to smash the window, and then break open the glove box. (and only if they new the glovebox had a switch).

Just tested it. Opened the windows/moonroof. Armed the alarm. Reached in and pressed the trunk button and it was disabled.
Good to know someone at BMW had their thinking cap on that day.

But what if I just "smash" your car and go to the truck through the rear seats??
*anything that is not permanently attached to the car will be covered by your home owner's insurance. (Not sure about renter's insurance.) |
