I've always wanted a build thread ft. 128i

Do people still make these? Or should I just start a youtube channel and try to monetize this. I know I always enjoyed build threads so here is an attempt at my own!

Already having an LCI E90 335xi, I was fairly familiar with the BMW brand, and when it came time to pick up a second car, I knew exactly what I wanted. Small, light(er then my xdrive 4 door) 6-speed and RWD. Enter the cheapest E82 I could find. Final price out the door 4850$ Canadian. 232000km's on her, no lifter tick and only a failed thermostat code (Still need to replace that...)

Drove home and to my surprise, not a single check engine light came on. Well maintained for over 200k on the clock and was told it was in the possession of an older gentleman who took good care of it before me, but had to get his grand-kids from A-B so he traded it in on a Mazda SUV.
Came home and decided to throw my old 3 series winters on it to see how it would look. (e90 has 18" BBS for summer and winter now)

Mod bug bit, as was to be expected. First it was just blacking out the grill with an old can of plastidip I had laying around. I know I know, plastidip is not a "mod" but cheapest way to change appearance of the stock chrome grill, and I was kidding myself that I wouldn't go deeper down the rabbit hole.

Decided the rubber was dead on the old e90 wheels so replaced them with some style 189 Wheels. Brand new rubber on them and next to free so I could not pass up (PO's car was hit and they had terrible curb rash but all straight and hold air). These suckers are heavy though, the car lost a lot of its "pep"

Went in for the blower motor recall and got a nice little added quote for 1300 to replace the rear shocks. Rock auto to the rescue, 120$ for 2 bilstein b4's to my door, all it cost me was 1 beer and the job was done.

Found a good deal on the S3IM, so naturally it was the next step. I already had a D-Can cable for my E90, bless the lord for Bimmerlabs, got BMW Tools working, updated the Daten files and got the 130i tune ready to go. Had to Solder a connector between 2 pins for it to connect with my 08 E82, but the internet is a wonderful thing and it only took me a few searches to know how to make it work. End result, nothing but smiles. If you are considering this, do it. Not a hard install, free software and it just plain wakes the car up.

While all this was going on, decided to some maintenance aswell. While I was in their the plugs got replaced and replaced the belt with the Continental kit (Belt, pulley and tensioner). The shift knob also was starting to peel and slice my finger every time I grabbed it the wrong way. Ordered a full leather knob and boot for 16 dollars off Ali express. How can you say no to that.

Which brings us to Pandemic time. One well placed call to the local BMW junkyard and I am just a little bit poorer, but damn is my backside happy. Manual leatherette seats replaced by Manual sport seats with power bolsters. A quick look at the plugs told me I was going to have to do some wiring, but of course the BMW forums come through again. Simple as connecting 2 grounds and 2 power wires with T-Tap connectors and its alive! Well the passenger seat is, the driver seat is fighting me a little but I will have to make sure the motors didnt go out.. O well its a comfortable width for me.

Congrats on your new (to you) 1 series.

And smart decision changing to the sport seats. You'll love them.

Thank you, the 1 has stolen my heart. I think its called growing up? appreciating something that is fun to drive and not just chasing psi and whp numbers with the n54.
Have m3 seats on the e90 so I know the sport seats offer quite a large upgrade.
The 3 is getting f30 brembos so I am trying to decide if I want to rebuild the 335 calipers and throw them on the front of the 1, Is it that big of an upgrade?

When you scan the car now with INPA or ISTA do you have the code for "No coding" as an error post bimmerlabs tune?

That's a worthwhile upgrade for sure. Many good threads on this. Look at one by Supergnat - he's OCD on painting and prepping this stuff, looks fantastic when done. Just check that they will fit under the various wheels you have (if you have a smaller winter set etc).

Good job so far!

I have the "Triggz tune" on my N54, and the error does appear on my P3 every time I start the car but no CEL or anything, I haven't checked the 1 yet but I am fairly positive it will be their. To me it's not that big of a deal, I know there is a few changes you can make with NCS Expert to get rid of it.. maybe one day down the road

Thank you!
I will take a look through the forums for some info, I am sure its a worthwhile upgrade especially if it can be done basically for free. I was considering the added benefit of stopping power vs the added weight of the bigger rotors and caliper, but I think I am taking this to far.. we will not be setting lap records, just a fun toy to play with/upgrade and make my own.

I'm happy with my first go at painting calipers, the red does look a little orange in the flash though...

It was a good day today. 5am wake up to drive to the big city to grab something that caught my eye last night. I was planning on running the stock wheels until I painted the style 189's and fixed the curb rash from previous owner. Always kept an eye out for something 5x120 that is lightweight and wont break the bank, some advans, maybe bbs, but today's purchase never crossed my mind. My god the second I picked up a wheel, I had to have these feathers.
Time to spice the Sauerkraut/Bratwurst with a little Basil/Mozzarella
OZ Superleggeras, 17x8 with some PSS that will get me through the year.

Thoughts on maybe a colour change that would go well with the black?
(I will mount them next week as I still had snow on the drive today and PSS don't do well with the cold)

Taking a big fat L today. The brake dust runs deep in these wheels, I will eventually get it off but it is going to be a struggle. Looking for some tips/technique people use as Sonax has let me down. Sat on the wheel for 10 minutes and did not turn red/purple..

If it is just dust, try a stronger wheel cleaner perhaps, and use abrasion. I have a lambskin wheel mitt that i always use. Let the spray go on for a minute or 2, and start rubbing making sure to get all the hard corners. Be sure to rinse the mitt and your hand inbetween every wheel.

I also would recommend test fitting the wheels before breaking your back on them unless they were already on a 1 to make sure the offsets work as these cars are known to be picky

I have a line on a acid cleaner that shouldn't harm the finish, but melt the residue away. At this point iv resorted to a toothbrush with a light abrasive toothpaste for the really hard stuff and a magic eraser for the barrel/spokes.

Wheels are 17x8 et 40, so I foresee no issues, if I do run into anything, adding camber/rolling a fender isn't a deal breaker for me. Heh 519 E82, that makes two of us!

I deal with this after every winter on my Sparco wheels. Use a paint compound, like Meguiars #105. Rub the compound in with an old MF towel or old sock and buff away after. It will clear it right up, both inside and outside the wheel!

Loving the build story so far, I've got a question about the brake callipers, are they OEM Brembo's or aftermarket? I'm looking to do something similar to mine

The Brembos are going on a 335xi I also own. They are stock brakes on F30 335i/340i/435i/440i. Sourced from some wrecked cars, they are not the Msport blue option (with a 370mm rotor) they are just the unpainted grey, still 4 piston brembos, but they take a 340mm rotor. Much cheaper and suit my purpose just fine. I just sanded them and painted them with a high heat primer and vht real red caliper paint.

The E90 335i single piston floating calipers are larger then the ones on the 128i so I will rebuild those, paint them and throw them on the 128i as an upgrade aswell.

Both upgrades should bolt right up with no issues, just plug and play oem goodness without any broken bank accounts.
