Insurance for a remapped car ?

£765.45 6 years no claims and i live in a low crime area , protected with Priviledge. Me thinks its too high but i do know that when i told them it was remapped the price went up a few hundred.

So any ideas that might be good ?

I did that with my first remapped car but as the insurance companies are most likely aware how many BMW's have been remapped , it would be the first thing i would check if i was them looking at a claim in excess of £100000.

Personally i'm a little wiser these days.

Tried A-Plan Insurance? My previous car - E46 330cd convertible - was remapped and they added only £60 when I told them. That was a year ago.

That covered 2 modifications too.

I use A-Plan Scott, but on the remapped 535d BMW were the cheapest.

A little tip, tell them it has added around 10% power wise, that way if they check the ECU at any point you are covered, it is very difficult to prove what the gains actually are, and impossible to prove what they were compared with your stock car.
My cover went from just over £500 to around £560 with BMW.

The increase for up to 15% was around 10%, for between 15-25% it was around 25% and for over 25% it needed to be underwritten and they came back to me with a price of over a grand. This was with A-Plan, not sure who the insurer was that was giving the quote.

Insurance companies sit ready to attack our wallets. My insurance company this morning attempted to hike my premium because i had 19" wheels fitted to my new car!!

Luckily wiggled my way out of that one

in preparation for getting my car remapped next month i rang my insurers (direct line) it worked out that it would be an extra £200 a year for the 335D remap.

Is it really worth it ?

Chris, I was charged £113 for the remaining 7 months including stupid admin. fees with BMW. Someone has mentioned that it's worth telling the insurance company about the percentage power increase ie. telling them the power increase is lower than it actually is, to reduce the additional premium?

yeah , i read that i think. Tell them its 10% increase or something, based on the theory that they cant prove the exact BHP increase !?

thanks Helen ... i meant though ' is it really worth that extra insurance hassle etc'

Yeah, I know what you mean Chris. I pondered about that but obviously in the end I went for the 'own up' option. I'm a civil servant, so don't take risks (boring bugger in other words)

Be careful Helen. Words like bugger and boring will lead to some twisted posts

Is it worth telling them or worth doing it???

I would say to own a 335 and not remap it is a crime, the difference is like night and day.

And I wouldn't dream about running round in a remapped car without telling them, things have moved on, payouts have got bigger and bigger and the insurance companies will do whatever they can to tray and wriggle out of paying up.

I informed my insurers, I think it added another £100 to the annual premium (and of course means I have a "modified" car), but well worth it in my opinion when the car's worth in excess of £30K. In case of a serious accident, I want to know that I'm definitely insured.

Edit: I just renewed my insurance in December, now paying £634, that's with £350 excess and 6 years protected NCB. The renewal quote states "Zurich Insurance have noted their records that vehicle XXXXX has had an ECU re-map carried out by C A Automotive Technologies Ltd, increasing BHP from 286 to 350".
