M-tech kit bumper design

I'm just curious what is actually the function of this? or is it purely just for aesthetics ?

As you said, just for looks

As you can see here ( thanks to the members who posted this), on the real cars its just a little step, and the insert is the same color

In the second pic you can see on the M6 the step evolves into a "mouth".
