BOGUS SPY-PICS of 1-er COUPE?

SIMULACRA IN THE DESERT

All of us are familiar with these spy-pics. The story goes that some intrepid photographer just so happened to snap these in the California desert on his cell phone.
He was then threatened by the fellows in the photo, they pounded on his car and he somehow managed to escape without any bodily harm.

BOGUS

I think these are carefully staged, deliberately grainy photographs orchestrated and paid for by BMW. The same guys who do those great nightshots of fatsuited prototypes.

Note how we only get to see exactly what BMW wants us to see...for example, how artfully posed the scrim is that hides the front of the car

(aren’t all of us hoping that we get a different grille and headlights than the Euro 1-series?) And the rear shot...whoops...taped up.
But BMW wants us to see the roofline, how perfectly and low the car sits on what appears to be 17” wheels. This particular shot is so professionally done it would do Tarentino proud.

And btw...these people, especially the “Chuckie” guy - they’re actors. Would you hire these people to do anything...anything like security or detailing or even schlepping film ecquipment around. I mean I wouldn't hire these people to mow my lawn...let alone pay them to do anything except to stay away.
These people are spoofs- spooky cliches - B-movie nightmare-in-the-Mohave.
Starring...the hard chick (oh yeah, black t-shirt in the desert sun - perfect attire for dehydration), the burnt-out surfer guy, and of course Chuckie.

This is Jean Baudrillard’s theory of the simulacra...the simulation of reality...acted out for you and me. Exactly you and me. This is our pornography from Playboy...oh, sorry, I meant BMW.

Don’t believe me? OK. Why haven’t we seen any additional photos? Scott27 said the
photographer was shopping around much better shots...that was over a month ago.
So where are they? I’ll tell you where...they are out there in the ether. They don’t exist.
These do because the two photographs are the product. These are the first official press photographs.
What photographer that you know reaches for their cell phone instead of their camera when presented with this kind of scoop?
To me, this is the new art- the art of the unreal posing as the real. The heightening of desire for consumership of an "inside" product.
Word-of-mouth. Image dissemination among the cognescenti via the internet.

So, thank you BMW for the skilled manipulation. I really mean that. You guys, wherever you are,are at the cutting edge of marketing.
You are ecqual to the genius' in the fatsuit department. And give Chuckie a big kiss from me.

Haha. I totally agree with Brookside. There would definitely be more photos of this thing. I mean it does look too perfect. And how ironic is that big white thing that blocks the view of the front?

When I first saw those pics I too wondered why the photographer didn't move few metres to capture the front of the car. The picture from the rear is just too "clean", I mean he had time to take that one.

I was looking at these photos again yesterday and thought, "one second-
these are too perfect!" Like you guys say, they are so deliberately posed.

So yes, I think we are seeing a very skilled guerilla-type of launch campaign that has adopted the normal protocols such as spy-pics
and flog them out there as "real".

I'm going to post some thoughts on who Scott27/26 and EniLab are.
What I think their function really is.

Nice painting of Chuckie by the German artist Albert Oehlen-
just thought I'd post it for comparison sake.

If Scott27 and EniLab wanted to remain anonymous to BMW, they'd have had to be far more subtle then they have been so far. Scott27 has gone as far as saying what projects he is in charge of, which surprised me. If they were providing info BMW didn't want them to, they'd have found him by now...

Seeing those shots, I'd say it goes without saying that it was staged. I think that's great, what a novel way to play on the building anticipation for this car! It would be funny if that wasn't even the Mojave desert at all, looks like it could just as easily be southern Spain, or any number of other locales. Well, that may be taking it a bit too far, but who knows? Just goes to show what kind of company BMW is. They want to be on the cutting edge of EVERYTHING, including their marketing. I love it.

Scott27:

Re: Spied: BMW 1-Series coupe
Today's quote :

"Simplicity without distraction"

And since it is Easter , An extra special Something to help with all that chocolate!

" Where Efficient Dynamics engages with driving desire"

In which we talk about - 50:50 weight distribution, intelligent lightweight design with modern energy management, aluminium suspension and front axle, enhanced agility, steering and road handling...

Re: Spied: BMW 1-Series coupe
Today's quote...

"An Instantly recognisable identity of a successful history."

The new BMW 1er Coupe.
Emotional Response.

Re: Spied: BMW 1-Series coupe
And so the countdown begins....

"Remember the Good times? The times you reminice and long for ?
the period where you can fall back on when things get tough?

It's the crave for for something nostalgic that triggers your emotions..."

Today I seen the first raw footage of some of the Sydney shoot.
Lost for words a nice driving shot of the Coupe on the Harbour bridge at sunset angel-eyes illuminated the first night lights of sydney begin to illuminate. reflecting a nice orange glow that illuminates the background ocean and the car. Although it has still to be edited and mixed with sound and music - Chilled out jazzy lounge breakbeats.
But we have plenty of Skyscaper shots by pointing a camera upwards and driving around the city - One my personal favorites is the beginning a finger presses the Start button and a traffic light goes green. Then the sun goes down and then the car is seen at night cruising the streets in which the music changes to very electronic fast beats again skyscrapers at night , climaxing in a stop outside the Opera house. The whole idea is to capture the energy , youth , desirability, image and expectation of the new Coupe .

Just a few examples of Scott26/27ís comments on this site and GermanCarZone. He also posts on CarSpyShots.

Somewhere, I think it was GCZ, Scott posted personal info where he talks about working for an independent pr firm that does business with BMW- I think thatís a fair and accurate characterization of his profile.

While I appreciate the insider info that Scott and Eni provide- I suspect their comments are officially BMW-approved leaks making them hired hands and more than interested fans. Some of it, also, I think, is dis-information or mis-information that puzzles me as to why. For example Scott recently posted where and when the 1-er would be shooting in downtown San Francisco. There were two guys with cameras from GCZ in S.F. who drove around for days...never saw anything- and if youíve been to the city by the bay you know itís a relatively small downtown.

But thatís not really a big deal- what is, is the bending of reality- the fake/real pics, the insider gossip/tips/facts that are there not to serve the interested public, but simply put, to schill cars for BMW.
To be fair, Scott and Eni shine when providing factual info on what we can expect...colors, engines, features.

I feel like a pampered guinea-pig. The site hosts, unwittingly I think,
cutting edge marketing strategies. To some extent, I donít like being messed with. But, like a junkie, I canít get enuff of any tidbit about the 1-er.

So, Iím ambivalent that these guys employ very sophisticated methods of consumer manipulation aside from Scottís recent meanderings and awkward turns of phrase. And kind of in shock that the debut of the car Iím interested in has been wrapped up in a quasi-insurgent form of mind-screw.

Ironically, the image that Harold posted and uses as the 2addicts logo is prescient...it looks to be precisely what we will get.

I wish I could agree with your sentiment over the 1er Coupe photoshoot in North America but Unfortunately your claim that it is staged is not true I'm afraid.

We sometimes do not get away with a clean shoot and sometimes we are scooped just out of shot will be BMW security guard . I was not on this shoot personally but information I received was that possibly two or three shots were taken - As until the information spread only the rear shot appeared at first.

As for myself I am in employment with an Independent automobile company in Munich , Germany and my additional creative work alongside my marketing work is to put words to the pictures the spy photographers take - It's all about marketing because we introduce information with additional speculation and watch the debate which helps us when we begin our marketing programmes for each model we introduce. It's called "Creative marketing" because we create a creative buzz through information - you have to ask would sites like this exist if we did not generate the talking points? Especially with a significant US bound model like the 1er Coupe - It is all about tapping into your requirements on how we develop the car and market it to your demographic . I like to portray each model as an event and everything is covered from the visual to the vicirial . In each course after each car is completed I have to make the team from the designers, managers to the engineers look good.

"The perfect combination of Exhilaration and Emotion..."

Heres what the Coupe looks like behind the mask and without a film crew....
And the Cabrio.
And the M1 - look at the picture and see if you see the insiders update .
look at the front and you will see the new M treatment which will feature on the M1 although the larger intake is more angular trapese shape to meet with the brake cooling ducts. All three heading your way and US bound too.

And Just over a month until the debut.

As I said this is sideline to my additional marketing work in which I suggest when you watch the visual M3 presentation click on and bookmark for the upcoming M3 Film and when the day comes turn up your speakers real loud ...

Thank you Scott26 for these new images and your marketing efforts to create the Buzz for the new models. With an off the topic question, BMW appears to be bringing thier diesel motors to the US in 2008 (likely beginning with the 5 series and the SUV segments). What are the chances that we will see a diesel version in the 1er hitting the US shores within the next couple of years? I strongly believe the US market is shifting to a mpg focus. We will see more hybrids, more diesels...and even a hybrid diesel within the new few years.

It just blows my mind that there will be a 135i and M1... it just absolutely freaks me out. But Scott says there will be and a BIG part of me believes him. If so, Bimmer is all about domination with this car. It dosent make sense for two main reasons. 1) the 135i would be fast as hell if not faster than the M1. It would satisfy many. 2) They would have given up on the original M1.

Anybody else think this is crazy?

Let's not forget that the whole "communication" that we have with Scott is all part of a marketing campaign. I don't even know what the intention is to throw us these pics that look clearly different from the spy pics and saying things like it's real, nor do I want to spend my mental energy trying to figure it out. :iono:

I highly doubt that there will be an M1 with S54 motor AND a 135i. I agree with you that it just does not make sense. While there is a mystique attached to the venerable S54, in reality it just is not a real match for the new turbo.

Perhaps this means that after all there won't be a 135i? :iono:

Has anyone noticed how similar the icon of the 1er at the top of this web site and the latest pictures/mock up from Scott26 are?? With a slight variation of the front fascia/undergrille, fog lights they are almost identical down to the wheels???? Interesting???

Please, let's end this. They are the same picture -- updated. Huckfeldt creates images of future models for Autobild, this site uses one of his images, and Huckfeldt has updated his original image. This updated image with a different front, I believe, is the "insiders update" Scott26 refers to.

As to whether the original shots were staged, I would like to point out the water bottle in the hand of the guy at the front of the car. Someone mentioned that the photographer had a water bottle thrown at his door, and in the second photograph he's heading toward the photographer, who is driving further away, with the bottle still in his hand. This supports the water bottle throw part of the story and seems to show that the photographer was driven off by the crew. Also, why would BMW spend all that money to produce and release only these crappy pics? Nobody gets dragged out to the desert, professionally, without being well-paid, so let's hope there are professional photos for us to see. Maybe we'll see them, along with the rest of the car, in five weeks.

Look, anyone can construct a fictive (water bottle) scenario- fold in some details that supports a linear logic narrative.
I'll stand by my earlier thoughts. The shots are grainy because they mimic the texture of the model they copy (spy-pics).

Show me more pics from this shot. Tell me the name of the photographer-
I mean c'mon.
This is the age of victimization- why hasn't this guy popped up w. his "story?"
I think I can guess his initials...WMB in your rear-view mirror.
His story has a sell-by date and it's passed.
But we are left with the image of the car successfully placed in dedicated media forums.

The photos are bogus in the sense that they are posed. And the only false note that I can see is the detritus of American nostalgia scattered about...
Greyhound sign, Model T, etc, which is actually, from what I understand, part of the "real" set which included a 2002 model BMW.

I think we are in an age of new strategies that specifically construct a romanticized parallel narrative to reality, thus becoming it's own reality.
This is a construct of desire portrayal complete with this years flavor- favor > the grotesque and forbidden, whose signifiers (Chuckie/biker-chick), act as a supporting cast.

Maybe this is nutty but I really believe this is very sophisticated stuff.
It plays as an enactment of Gilles Deleuze's theory of "The Fold".
He explains how we really don't have an object we desire, but something that is more complicated and rich...a narrative fantasy that includes the object of desire.
So it's not the blonde...it's cruising by your ex-wife who is devastated to see you in a roadster with the blonde in the passenger seat.

This photo plays with voyeurism- the veiled (sexy) object which we undress. And it's just human nature to be curious and what the back and the front of a car might correlate to the human body...what part we are most interested in seeing-what part is covered.

This isn't exotic or forbidden or delusional...it's Deleuzional & his thinking is out there being interpreted and adapted in various contemporary formats.

Much in the same way that Marshall McLuhan's media theory's and Jean-Paul Sarte's writings on Existensialism
(a kind of surrogate apologia for France's absolute ethical collapse during WW2) were applied and informed the 50's and 60's.

The photo is the proof- if you can call a bunch of arranged pixels proof of reality.

I doubt that I am wrong. It's simulacra. It's Deleuzian desire scenario. It's manipulation by some smart people.
And sorry I rambled here. Flame away.

Because the crappy images were their goal, I think. Look at the trouble and expense they go to just to cover every one of their prototypes...with fatsuits.
And then compare this, or any other BMW model under development with what their competition does...this is near obsessional application of gorgeous camoflage by BMW.

Take a close look. In some places there's two layers of disguise ( note the false strakes on the door below the outermost skin ) that almost completely covers the body...if there really is a body in the conventional sense underneath. So, again, it's this tease - the suspension of completeness that BMW mines. And it's not done merely to disguise...not at this manic level. To me it's about heightening suspense and desire. The whole thing...the aesthetic is drama...step-by-step disrobement as the prototype reveals the production model beneath. Money is, apparently, not the main consideration. This is image seduction and deception. The strip tease.
Kick back...enjoy.

As someone who is responsible for these media and web presentations , I find the concept of a photo shoot within a photo shoot as you say ? .......Lame.
I don't see how that concept will work and especially with the premium image of BMW.

Anyway is the discussion closed because I can tell "Chuckie" Or Herr "H" you said Hi.
