Road & Track: 135i is "fast and frugal"

The Fast & The Frugal: BMW 135i

It's beast of an engine develops 300 bhp and rather impressive fuel economy considering its output.

By Matt DeLorenzo Photo by Jeff Allen
August 20

The new 1 Series from BMW is not the entry-level car we thought it might be, but instead is an impressive performance car in its own right, thanks in no small part to its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6.

This beast of an engine develops 300 bhp and some rather impressive fuel economy (17 mpg city/25 mpg highway) considering its output.

While the 1 Series has been criticized for its high sticker price, it still is less expensive than the 3 Series, while offering near-M3 performance. Speed and agility in a compact package are factors that have enabled the 135i to snare a spot on the index. This is due to its quick acceleration 4.8 sec. to 60 mph and a sub-14-sec. quarter mile and its ability to stick in the corners as evidenced by its 0.91g on the skidpad and 70.6 mph through the slalom.

While the 128i does have a more efficient 230-bhp 3.0-liter six, it comes nowhere near its more powerful sibling in delivering the ultimate fun factor. In this case more, not less, is really more.

Price As Tested $43,670
MPG 17 city/25 highway/21.0 average
060 mph 4.8 sec.
Slalom 70.6 mph
Quarter Mile 13.4 sec. @ 104.0 mph
Skidpad 0.91g
600-mph Braking 114 ft.
Tank Capacity 14.0 gal.
Theoretical Maximum Range 350 miles
Cost to Fill $56.00
EPA Estimated Annual Fuel Cost $2814

This is a new Review of the 135i Vert from Canada's CarGuide, out today. Unfortunately, it isn't that great, and I think he should have been driving a non-sport 128i Vert to get what he wanted !!

Sounds like a car review from Retirement Home Quarterly. He wants a softer ride because "grand touring is about space, pace and grace."

Bimmer magazine has 1000 mile report on 135i.
They love it. ( More fun to drive than an M3?)

Edmunds full test on the 135i convertible.

"
Vehicle Tested:
2008 BMW 1 Series
135i 2dr Convertible (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 6M)
MSRP of Test Vehicle: $44,450
What Works:
An entry-level car with 300 hp; trunk space isn't compromised by the stowed top; top down in 22 seconds.

What Needs Work:

Um, nothing.

Bottom Line:

With a top-down option and comparable performance numbers, why would anyone want just the plain old 1 Series coupe?"

awesome

This month's (October) Bimmer magazine has a pretty favorable 135 review. I'd post it but can't find an e-version but if you find an October Bimmer Mag, it's a good couple page read (though preaching to the choir with this group!).

I don't know how many of you ppl from the US of A have heard of Jeremy Clarkson, and I trawled through looking to see if people have read his review of the 135i.

For the unenlightened, I think you should click on the following link

Oh, the guy from Top Gear? Didn't he do a comparison of the 135i against a Cayman?

I think you're referring to Fifth Gear, another UK car/driving show.

Drivers Republic compares the 123d to the 350Z on backroads, on autobahn, and at the Nordschleife:
http://viewer.zmags.com/showmag.php?...1&_x=1#/page2/

Also indirectly compares it to the 135i (beats the 135i for balance and reminds them of the E30 M3).

There was a very favourable end-of-long-term-test report on the 135i coupe in this week's Autocar magazine in the UK.
