Second-generation 6HP 6-speed automatic transmission: faster than human perception

The second-generation 6-speed automatic transmission is undoubtedly a fast transmission and is designed for torques of up to 850 Newton meters. At the heart of the transmission are the turbine-based torsional dampers for gasoline engines and a dual damper converter for diesel engines. They are able to bridge the converter slip period much quicker and therefore result in more direct engine integration for greater responsiveness and optimized fuel consumption. In contrast to the predecessors, the gasoline engine reduces fuel consumption by three percent while the diesel engine saves six percent. A hydraulics system and control software now make it possible to downshift multiple times without any loss of time and also reduce reaction times by 50 percent to below the threshold of human perception.

I like the part about 850 newtons, shouldn't have any trouble due to mods.

Yes, but they said that one might never be produced. It was unclear exactly which one was going to be in the N54 equiped 3 and 1 series. The 28 is good to 700 nm 515 ft/lbs. Still good for mods, but not bulletproof. I will have to drive one though now to be sure. I had my mind made up on manual, but this is good info.

I'm assuming each paddle (L and R) can shift both up and down the gears? If so, that's a real shame...

FYI 850 Newton/meters is about 627 ft/pounds

I seem to recall that current paddle shifters can be modified to only work for upshifts and downshifts.

If so I need to do this.

Actually I did see somewhere someone did it. In other reads by searching the net i came across that the same box is in the Maserati Quattroporte and many other cars.

I find it good news because this will be my first automatic. When I read that you could downshift skipping gears, in neutral at stop and was very very fast at shifting(faster then a human) i was relieved very very relieved.

I still would like a manual but i cannot justify it as my daily driver in traffic and with a child in the backseat. sigh*
