2002 325Ci has a 16.4 gallon tank and gets 22 mpg everyday.
My old '91 318is had a 14 gallon tank, but that car got about 24 mpg everyday.
I think the 14 gallon capacity includes the 2 gallon reserve. If I'm wrong then that's good news.

Will mean more frequent stops for gas then. I'm expecting around 19 mpg mixed driving on the 135i.

The 14 gallon tank is going to screw up my whole road trip routine I think. My current car has a 17.5 gallon tank and will go almost 400 miles on it if I'm doing the speed limit. That lets me stop after 2.5 hours and stretch, and then it's ready for a fill up 2.3 hours later.

Assuming 25MPG on the highway the 1 will only go about 320 miles before you need to think about stopping. I'm going to have to adjust my routine I guess.

That's for sure. 135i is a thirsty little monster as well. I can get 400 miles on 12.5 gallon tank with 1 to 1.5 gallon left in tank for my civic.

No cars are really have an actual reserve tank. Any additional gas is just in the filler tube or they did not properly state the size. I know on my MINI, I can get just over 14 gallons in a 13.2 gallon tank if I am bone dry but ther eis only one tank.

actually they do have a "reserve" tank that is just additional capacity beyond what is stated in the specs and in most modern BMW's, it's usually around 8 liters.

Maybe on your M3, but not on my Z3, Z4 or E46 sedan. On all of these vehicles the fuel tank capacity is within 2 liters of BMW spec.
My BMW R1200RT motorcycle will take 3 liters of over spec fuel, but this requires removing a gasket and "overfilling" the tank according to BMW.

14 Gal. includes the reserve. When the gas light comes on at around 50 miles to go until empty you are then using the "reserve".

I've been to darn near empty and filled. It took 13.7 gal.

Then you should say reserve "tank" as there is most assuredly no additional tanks in this car. Having 2 tanks would require pumps and all kinds of stuff to make it work. Now, as I said, based on my experience with the MINI, like many other specs BMW is pretty conservative with their reported size IMO.

All I know is the range sucks compared to my 3.2 TT. I believe the TT (3.2) has a 60 liter tank, compared to the 53 liter tank on the 135i. Costs less to fill it up though! But I'd rather have a larger tank.

Well, I just did a road trip over the holiday weekend, and the range is actually not as bad it would seem. I was getting 350 miles on a tank, and hauling ass. I put 13.5 gallons in on one fill up.

I'm expecting the mileage will improve a little as the car breaks in (mine is still under 2k miles even after the trip), so that should tack on another 15 or 20 miles per tank, which will be pretty reasonable. Slowing down to the speed limit would probably increase it even more. Judging by the instant MPG display the car would get better than 28MPG at a steady 70MPH, which would make the 14 gallons good for 370 miles without fear of running out (actually 392 if you ran it bone dry).

It's not great, but certainly liveable.

I have been averaging 19 mpg and the other day the computer was showing 16 miles left before running empty. After filling up it only took 12.7 gallons of fuel.
Is there a chance that my car has a tank smaller than 14 gallons? Has any body seen this in his/her 1er?

The miles to empty indication is a little cautious. I've ran mine down to 5 miles and still only put 13.5 gallons in.

the miles to empty is based on the mpg you got during the last 18 miles of driving, not the average mpg for the tank.

i usually fill up at 240 miles on the tripometer, with the range showing 30 miles and put in like 12.3 gallons. then the range changes to 315 miles.
