found a better intake but it's more expensive

For all you who did not like the bms because it was so close to the engine and worry about the heat issues. This has a bit more distance from the engine

if you have already seen this then, sorry!

Uh but now it really is just sucking in hot air. At least the filter options are still hitting the incoming air from the kidney vents

The cone on that one looks really small compared to other choices. Any flow restrictions?

It should have a heat shield at that price. Though, many would say it's not needed in a turbo car, but it's not going to hurt either.

yeah some people think cause you have an intercooler it doesnt matter... but colder air makes more power period.. an intercooler is not an a/c it deosnt lower the temp to x* it lowers its by x*
I still prefer a nice CAI or the BMS filter as it still gets air from the front air ducts

Seems like factory air box is still the way to go as long as hot air intakes are the only option.

I am going to try the factory box with a Streamline panel filter and see how it works.

Seems like a horrible design. I just can't really see how any other intake system will improve on the OEM design, it's a dual kidney ram air intake. You can replace the filter with a K&N panel filter

The counter argument is that the turbo's get the intake temp so high that not matter what the intake temp is, it's still going to get to the same temp after the tubo.
I figure it doesn't hurt to have a heat shield.

It will be interesting to see if there are any gains found with the BMW performance filter kit ....

its never going to be the same temperature:
The formula to figure the ideal outlet temperature is:
T2 = T1 (P2 ÷ P1)0.283
Where:
T2 = Outlet Temperature °R
T1 = Inlet Temperature °R
°R = °F + 460
P1 = Inlet Pressure Absolute
P2 = Outlet Pressure Absolute

Most tuners have said the factory box is a limitation as the power goes up.

That is true but they omit a few facts. The gains on pressure drop reduction with CAI or filter are more or less because compressor efficiency is on big downwards slide at around 14 PSI….the compressor is starting to choke. It is all good but not really the truth. You do the same with an intercooler which is big bang for the buck.

orb does this imply that a better filter would automatically require a bov for optimization?

That kit is a rip off...just a bit of plastic drain pipe+ a K&N haha. What you really need to do is locate the filter in the front bumper somehow totally out of the engine bay. I have done this on other cars and it means that intake air is same as ambient. Means longer intake pipe length though. I do not know if this is achievable on the 135i.

Someone needs to develop an intake like the J's racing or Mugen intakes for the S2K. They have a "snorkel" to direct cool air from the front of the vehicle to the filter. The snorkel actually encompasses the filter, so it's not sucking in air from the engine bay.

This shouldn't be hard to do with the 1. Just make a piece that connects to the existing ducts and houses the high flow filter.

There is a 335i intake that locates the filter in the drivers side wheel well area. It looks to be a great design. Nate
