pardon the noob question, but what's the best/most accurate way to find out your car's build date? there must be some sticker/ID somewhere, right?
EDIT: i saw a post about an ecu sticker...so V8.0 = pre 3/08 build & V8.1 = post 3/08 build, correct? anyone have a picture?

Wanted to subcribe to this thread, haven't purchased my 135i yet, but plan on doing some mods to it, not sure if I should order new or purchase a pre-owned earlier build version. :iono:
Any updates or ideas? Braden

order new and get what you want...they have found ways to tune un-detected for post 3/08 productions for a while now...ive had sstt for about 2 months now, and shes still running strong.

Time has passed since my original post and most tuners including Dinan, Vishnu, and BMS have developed tunes that are ECU v81 'friendly' (spelled i-n-v-i-s-a-b-l-e).

karma8, you need to do your due diligence in order to inform yourself. First talk to or read up on the tunes available from Dinan, Vishnu, and Burger Motor Sports. Then, if you plan on having a shop do the install, research which shops in your area have done the tune you prefer. Try to talk to other cutomers of the local shop that got the same tune you are considering.

The only way the dealer will know it is on there is if they dismantle your car and physically look for it. Set correctly it should be invisible. You can remove it for dealer service if you are really worried. JMHO

I'm just worried that it might be detectable if they hook up to the scanner (DIS) and are able to tell if there was something there on the V81 software.

I realize people on here are saying piggybacks can't be detected but not one person is so confident they've offered to pay for repairs if the dealer (or bmw) does have a way to detect them. The good thing is the cars are over engineered and the turbos seem to be holding up pretty well running such high boost.

I had the ECU upgrade and left the JB3 in and it went undetected.

During most time they only look at the flash code, VIN code and error codes from the ECU. They will not look at the map installed by the tuner unless they download them and analysis it.
I challenge any dealer to compare the map from stock to tuner and try to find out differences. Start from the boost number . The higher the difference the easier to spot ![]()
