I think its due to the laws that cause modern cars to raise the body above the front wheel arch i.e Mitsubishi Lancer, new Merc's, Audi, well Audi have been using a stub nose all along! It's a growing manufacturing trend.

AW 1M with an old dude in it (for lack of a better identifier

and then right after I turned, an AW 135i (think it was a sport+) with rego "KILLIN 1T"
