Comfort access warning
I was taking my harnesses out of my car this morning and I inadvertently put my keys (fob) on the top of the car. After my little chore, I was off to do some errands. I usually keep my keys in my briefcase which I take with me most places. With my briefcase in the right seat, I was off driving through my neighborhood. All of a sudden my keys come falling into my left window. I guess I was pretty lucky all in all. They could have gone a lot of other places maybe without me knowing it.
This might have been posted before but I just wanted to warn others with comfort access about this possibility - especially those with a little adult ADD that does not help the situation either. |

No warnings since as far as the car was concerned there was no problem. and yes it is designed to keep going without the fob there. Don't get me wrong, I totally love the comfort access - worth every cent. It is weird to drive a car that does not have it now.

That's kind of funny. I had a friend of mine sit in the driver seat and I was standing right next to him and he tried to start the car and it wouldn't start since the keys weren't inside the car. I guess being on the roof is good enough because it puts them between the receivers/antenna.

That's a funny story.
Well, there was once a time when I somehow lost the remote control to a television, but that would never make me want a TV without remote control. Thanks for the warning, but I really like the Comfort Access feature. Worth the "risk" of putting my keys on the roof (which is usually open... hehehe).

I've actually been wondering, after starting the car, if you keep moving the fob away from the car what will happen? Will it shut off? I've left the car running a couple of times to go to a walk up ATM and the car stays on even though I'm 15-20 feet away.

the car will not shut off... you just can't restart it.

Sorry I never had cars with Comfort Access before, and I am planning on getting it on a 135i in a few months.
I wonder what would happen if the key falls off the roof to the street. Will the car lock up and shut down by itself? Just curious. Thanks. Regards, |

Funny story, the FOB never leaves my pocket whenever driving the car. Haven't done a lot of experiments, actually only once, the range of the FOB appeared to be about 15 feet under the conditions I tried.

Weird... there should be a crossed-key symbol appearing in the center display when the FOB is outside (even just) the compartment. I tried just now, and the icon indeed showed up on the display no matter where on the roof I put the FOB. Software issue?
The car can actually be restarted during the first ten seconds after it was shut off when the FOB is absent. |
