Has anyone topped out there car?

BMW claims that our cars will stop at 150 mph with the OEM limiter in. Is the limiter an actual speed limiter or is it a RPM limiter in 6th gear? If it is the RPM limiter, would it be possible to achieve a higher top end with a different final drive ratio?

In the UK they quote 155 MPH and from what I have read you can hit the speed limiter in earlier gears than 6th so it is not just in 6th gear that the limiter kicks in.

I'm sure the limiter will be linked to the speedo irrespective of the gear you are in. Our Mazda CX7 is limited to 220kph and I can hit that in 5th or 6th. It just feels like your wind resistance has suddenly increased and it won't go any faster. Very undramatic.

Not sure if my 123d will hit the limiter. Brochure says the top speed is 247kph which is just under 155mph. That's before I chip it of course...

In 6th gear at 155 indicated the car tachs something like 5600-5800rpm. When I was in Germany I did about a half an hour on Autobahn 3 at max speed, just because I could, but its been a while since then and I don't recall the exact rotational speed.

In Germany almost all companies have agreed to limit their Cars to 250km/h which equals 155.34 mph i have read tests that state that BMW says 167.77mph to 170.88 mph are possible on the stock car. Hartge for example has a software which removes vmax. Porsche for example is one of the companies that do not adhere to this de facto standard. Therefore the often compared Cayman S wins vmax very often and means that you will be overtaken at some time as mentioned before this feels like running into a block of wind you know the car could go faster but it is restricted. I myself did 146.02 mph on the autobahn and this is more than you should do with all the idiots around who do not know that their cars come equipped with mirrors and change into left lane with around 60 mph.
Sorry fat text comes from speed translator.

While on the autobahn during ED I had an indicated 158 mph with GPS showing 148 mph actually. This was about 5500 rpm in 6th which translates to about 6200 rpm in 5th.

On our ED this August, the indicated speed on the speedo read 155. It's definitely a speed limiter, not a rev limiter.

BTW, the car wanted to go faster

Its definitely a speed limiter, and not a rev limiter. I had no problem getting to 140+ in 4th gear at Pocono raceway.

150 is awfully dangerous you guys, please be careful and consider only on closed roads. If the tires were A048R stock or Pilot Cup Sport, then I wouldn't mind too much.

I hit 155-157 on the speedo, but from what I understand that is more like 148-150... it's really fast! 120 felt like cruising after that stint.

Oh, geeze, just shut up.

The 135i with sport package has better tires to correspond to the higher speed limiter. The models without the sport option are limited at 135mph since their tires aren't rated for higher speeds. If it weren't acceptable to drive that fast then the Bundes Republic Deutschland would impose a limit on all their roads. As it is, only sections of the Autobahn are unlimited and no, its not unsafe to drive 130+ mph on those road surfaces, provided traffic will permit. You just can't go out and be a dumbass while you're at it. Don't be ignorant.

Wrong information.

The Tires on the non-sport pkg 135i are exactly the same as the tires on the sport package 135i.

Spent perhaps 20ish minutes today at 157-159 (speedo, no idea of actual) on the way to Leipzig. As per other's observations, this was at an approximate 5500-5600 RPM.

Was perfectly safe and comfortable!

He may have been thinking of 128i's without the sports package?

BTW, on roads like the autobahn (traffic permitting), 155 mph doesn't feel that dangerous at all. It's actually very fun. You should try it sometime before you make ridiculous comments like that.

Sorry fat text comes from speed translator.
I have that happen a lot. I have started doing more and more pre-emptive braking especially after a close call I had recently where someone was changing lanes WHILE I was next to her and almost squeezed me into the guardrail (and that was only at 80) Still nothing like maxing out the car though. Makes a long drive go MUCH quicker.

Bingo...had the same scenario. ~155mph on the speedo, I think 148 on the GPS
