Recommend me a Navigation GPS for Oz!

What is a good one to get (nothing too flashy or anything) for Oz, including rural areas? And one that would possible go with the interior/fit nicely in the 1 series coupe.

Your recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've always had Garmins, currently have an old StreetPilot 2600 - chunky, but very rugged and first class user friendliness. Excellent rural coverage with heaps of small fire trails mapped. Leaves my i-drive Pro Nav for dead.

The Garmin nuvi models are nice, but I don't plan updating as I keep my maps up to date.

You can't go wrong with Navman, Tom Tom, etc I'm sure.

I bought my wife a Garmin Nuvi 310 awesome gps compact and it shits all over my X3 Sat Nav and its 14 times cheaper. It has great coverage. We decided to keep using that instead if the idrive nav in the 120i convert we have coming.

Couldn't agree more. The most annoying things about i-drive pro nav are: you can't easily mark and save your current position, it doesn't auto zoom when you get nearer to your destination, badly organised POI menu/search.

I just recently bought a garmin nuvi 250 and it's pretty good. The suction cup attaches to the ashtray and fits nicely. Make sure you get it pre-loaded with all the speed camera POIs. I had to do it all myself and was a pain in the ass.

I had the top of the range garmin nuvi until it got stolen out of the car. That's one reason I got the idrive because there is less chance of staling it.

The Garmin nuvi is a great easy to use unit. I might get a garmin Nuvi 250 just to use it for the speed camera alert. I can mount it where it can't be seen so that it won't get stolen again. These are about $229 at Dick Smith at the moment.

I've got a Road Angel. Don't ever buy one of these. Absolute shite. I'll be watching this thread closely to decide on a replacement.
How about the optional BMW unit that clips onto a bracket on the dash? Expensive initial buy & expensive map upgrades?

I think the portable BMW unit is a rebadged Garmin.

Thanks for the advice. I was at harvey Norman's today and got interested in a Tom Tom ONE v3 (because it is v.compact) and also I liked the new MIO 360 which I have read rave reviews about. Going to wait for car to arrive first to see which will fit best.

Tom Tom is the best, I have the Garmin for my wife because it is the easiest to enter address.

I use N95 for navigation. The version 2 Nokia maps is better than the Garmin, except I have 2000 mobile/fix camera spots installed in the Garmin.

I just bought a TomTom Go 930 used it drive from Canberra to the Gold Coast via the inland route through Dubbo - Tamworth and up to Tenterfield then down the Mt Lindesay Highway. Was excellent the whole way and all speed camera sites were marked and accurate. The one just out of Tamworth I wasnt paying much attention and Im sure it saved me a ticket. Really easy to use and extremly fast lockon to the sats.

I have the Garmin (bmw unit). It clips onto the dash and is very user friendly. I have not actually used it that much however. Not sure about updating the maps or anything. My car is going into BMW this thursday so I might ask them to do it then.

I would highly recommend it ( thought I have nothing as a base for comparison).

I subscribe to Choice magazine, excellent mag and reviews on everything and anything.

Read through an article recently on portable nav and the TomTom 720 came up trumps out of about 10-15 other units priced under $800.

Went out and bought it for my father (fathers day pressie) and he loves it.
My father is mid 50's and never really been computer savy but easily gets his way round this unit.
Has all the good stuff, bluetooth, MP3 and a large screen that's easy to get around.
Check prices here: http://www.shopbot.com.au/p-57855.html
I think the unit retails in the $600's.

+1

Personally own a One XL, same as the 720 minus speakerphone functionality via bluetooth.

Great unit. Fast satellite capture and easy to use. Rechargeable from USB and last for 2-3 hrs from one charge.

I hide it in the glove box when not in use.
