Punctured tyre!
title says it all...
was driving around and the tyre pressure indicator went off. i found my rear left tyre had gone down about 10psi (40 to 30) and a nail head sticking out the bottom of it. does anyone know of whats the go with repairs to runflats? can you get them plugged? or can you use a sealant to seal it off???? the real annoying thing is that i have to drive 150ish kms tomorrow morning.... oh... and anyone still want to sell a spare wheel/tyre by any chance???

Bad news jksgoh, from what I've read - puctured runflats shouldn't be repaired. I understand that any reputable tire place won't repair it. A sealant is possible, but I'm no expert. I don't think I'd be driving 150km's on it though. I am sure others with better advice will chime in.

They can be repaired just like any tyre. However as there is the unknown of how long you have driven around with a damaged tyre most places won't repair.
However in your case since there was still good pressure in the tyre (despite the loss) I would get it repaired as you haven't put the sidewalls under any stress. Drive around with zero pressure or less than about 15 psi and the sidewalls would have been doing a lot to support the tyre, which will have damaged their useful life.

Looks like the jury's out. Do a Google on "repair runflat" and spend the next couple of hours reading conflicting stories... That's not to say AussieRacer's wrong, just that opinions vary.

thanks for the replies guys.
ye i didnt feel comfortable driving 150kms on it either... my gf has nicely leant me her car for the week. wont be able to get anything done until friday (when im back), so i guess i'll do a little reading up on the topic. but as im doing quite a bit of highway driving i suspect i'll prob opt for replacing it. i remember reading a post about not all tyre/wheel places not being able to fit RFTs properly? any truth to this? im prob going to go to a beaurepair or something similar...

what is it with the one series and left rear tyres? I just replaced the left rear tyre on my 120 due to a nail in tread. I wanted to repair the tyre but as I've been driving on it for a while I was advised to replace it.

+1 on the old "nail in the year passenger tyre trick"
I was advised not to repair by Donnellan's Box hill. Beware of replacement. Not cheap!

Interesting - I was offered a special wheel & rim insurance from the dealership at the time of delivery which I took up (still not sure if it was a good impulse purchase).
for $580 once off, they insure for 3 years, $350 of a replacement wheel or repairs (unlikely!) in the event of nails/potholes/blowouts/screws/glass etc. Same applies to the rims eg in potholes/road debris etc up to the value of $1000. Only covers rims which fail to seal or are deemed not roadworthy Also includes $120 coverage of towing fees. the max claim allowable is 2 wheels per year, 1 rim per year. Policy I think has to be taken out on new vehicles. Still not sure if it's worth it - although in your situation, you would feel better. (still it's gotta happen twice over 3 years to be worth your while) Thoughts?:iono: If anyone's about to take delivery soon - I can email you the powerpoint presentation I was sent. |
