Off Topic: Canon Australia Photo5 Competition

Seeing as a lot of us are into photography, I'm wondering if any of you have registered/entered the Canon Photo5 competition?

If you haven't, it's too late now, but here's what it's about...

Upon registration each entrant receives a box of items, which they need to photograph as creatively as possible. The items are:

Red ribbon
Tealight candle
Cocktail umbrella
Crayon
Bubbles (in a little bottle with a blower thingy)

Here's my red ribbon entry (already submitted so I'm ok with posting it here). If anyone else has entered, show us what you came up with!

That's very creative Corey, far better than the finalists and winners from last year so I wish you luck !
I have entered but no pics as yet. Still trying to decide what to do that's not run of the mill.

Hi Corey, I got told about it and checked it out, but I'm not very creative with that type of thing so decided not to waste the judges nor my time!

That said, I think you've done very well! Good on ya and good luck!

Thanks mate. You can enter one photo per item, but I'm really struggling for ideas for the other items.

Hope I'm not boring you with this...

Here's my entry for the "cocktail umbrella" photo in the Canon Photo5 competition.

How I did it:
I removed the paper from the cocktail umbrella, as well as the stem, then painted the remaining frame black. I used an old photo I took of the moon, and added some stars using Photoshop, then projected the image onto my Plasma TV. I put a branch in a pot, and positioned it in front of the TV. I then attached the "spider" to the tree using a piece of thread, turned off the lights, and took the shot. See here for a photo of the set up if you're interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coreysphotos/2960766365/

Jeez, Corey, what drugs are you on??? How on earth did you come up with that BRILLIANT concept?

WAY, yeah, I had to read it a couple of times - the 'spider' looks so real...

Stunning red ribbon picture Corey. Full marks also for the cocktail umbrella spider, that's brilliant!

However I wonder whether the judges would want a cocktail umbrella to look like a cocktail umbrella?

Thanks guys. Jono, it appears a little noisy because it's an image on my TV. I shot it at 100 ISO.

Corey this is awesome work.

I really appreciate this sort of art, probably because my creative gland isn't the biggest I really admire people who can do this kind of craft.

you are on a roll here!
with the crayon theme you could try overlaying sheets of different textures and then drawing across them with one or more crayon colors. the granulation will be very different and make for a challenging shot with depth, contrast, and "meaning".

I like the sound of that, Prateek. Might have to give it a go after work. The competition closes in 12 hours, so I'll have to get a wriggle on if I want to submit photos of the other items!
