Can't wait for my JB3 come in December. My next mod is the cat back exhaust and I am leaning toward CP-E.

I love my JB3, really transforms the car and makes some sick power, the upgraded chip (I had an old unit) is like day and night, Two thumbs up from me.

If you still have the SSTT you could try it with the JB3 like this guy did.

Yeah okay... Even if common sense did not kick in, after reading thru those posts I think not.. thanks though..
The thing I love about the SSTT is how safe it is and how much of a difference you feel... But I need more bang for the buck and that is where the JB3 comes in... I just hope I don't regret it...

I don't understand why eveyrone wouldn't run map 4 instead of map 3 or why map 3 is even included?

I think that's there because not everyone had the lag issues. They're probably dumbing down the boost signal going back to the ECU a little more when you first step on the gas to make it react faster. BMW dialed it back to deal with noisey bypass valves originally by changing the PID loops on certain software versions. Running the lagfix map on a car that doesn't have the laggy software will probably hurt driveability a little (make it jumpy).

That's just a guess though.

Can you explain how the map switching works a bit more? You simply power the car up but don't start it, then press the gas pedal to change to the next map in sequence? Is there any way to tell what map you are on? Sounds like it could be quite easy to accidentally switch over to the hot map by mistake and I'd hate to do that!

Didn't the JB3 have an option of having a little switch in the engine bay to switch between 3 maps? Does this new functionality replace that option?

It's all explained in the tech section on the BMS site.

Hi never, I checked the site and all I could find was this:
"With JB3 software version 1.2 coming out 1/15/2009 users can now switch maps or disable the JB3 from the drivers seat!"
From this page:
http://www.burgertuning.com/jb3.htm
If anyone knows more details I would appreciate them!

This is a quote from the JB3 PnP Instructions located HERE

Quote:
Gas pedal map switching:

Starting with JB3 software version 1.2 (e.g. your JB3 control module has a 1.2 or larger
number written on the bottom of it), maps can be selected via a hidden gas pedal menu
OR via a hardwire switch. In addition to the stock map, there are six performance maps,
and numerous diagnostic and special needs maps. Do not select a map higher than 7
unless directed by BMS.

To engage JB3 gas pedal map switch mode press and hold gas pedal with engine off /
ignition on for 4 seconds, and then release gas pedal. This will put the JB3 in map listen
mode and also enable map 0.

Once in listen mode to cycle through maps press and release the gas pedal the number of
times needed for your desired map. For example for map 3, "high boost" press and release
gas 3 times. You do not need to hold the pedal down, a quick press to floor and release
will do. Start the motor and your map will be saved until changed.

If also equipped with the 3 position wire in switch, the middle position enables gas pedal
map switching, the red dot forces map 7, and the black side forces map 3. If equipped with
the RixEffects vent mount boost gauge, consult with RixEffects for mapping details.
Hope this helps

I've been lurking around the site for awhile I see many of you have remapped your cars for more power. My question though is have any of you had any damage to the motor or more specifically the transmission with such an increase in power?

I have a steptronic AT and have not noticed any ill effect from the JB3.

But as a rule I don't do 1st gear launches because 1st is pretty much all wheelspin.

I also stopped downshifting via kickdown switch on the floor (which is hard on the tranny) and just use the paddle shifters manually when I want to dip into the power.

I think the BMW auto tranny is quite rugged compared to my prior GTI, which had the twin clutch DSG transmission. I flashed the GTI to about 250 hp and noticed that the tranny started to get very sloppy in it's shifting shortly thereafter.

So far I have 4,000 miles on this tune and am still impressed with how well the car runs.

In fact, flogging it once in a while seems to improve the feel of the engine.

Just use some common sense and don't over do things.

Even with a tune, 95% of the time you spend on the road will be at stock power levels or lower (according to my boost gauge anyways).

The main thing to watch out for is heat.

Engine knock/detonation are tops for engine damage and they are directly correlated to higher combustion temperatures.
