Push button, hamster not home...

Hi guys,

A couple of times (literally), I've pushed the start button and, while the ignition starts, the engine doesn't. Initially, I thought it may be a symptom of the fuel pump issue, but it doesn't crank, it just does nothing (dash lights up, last night the headlights came on).

A couple more tries and all is good, starts straight away. Anyone else had this happen to them?

Once was last week and the 2nd time last night.

We had this happen on our 130i. We took it back to BMW, they did the old ECU tinkering thing they tend to do when you have these kind problems and hey presto fixed. The fact that they did not bat an eyelid when we raised the issue and they fixed in double quick time suggests that the problem is a reoccurring one.

This happens to me a fair bit. I get the key with a slash symbol and the ding dong. I wait a few seconds and try again and it generally starts. A couple of times I've had to pull the fob out and plug it in the dash before anything happens. It has put me off comfort access, as a result.

same thing used to happen with my 120i occasionally, but i never bothered taking it to the dealer since it worked if i kept the button depressed for a tad longer anyway.

amk2912, no, it's not that. That's when CA hasn't detected the fob. Has happened to me once or twice, but the benefits of CA outweigh that (for me anyway). This was different, no key with slash, think I got ding-dong, but that was seatbelt if I recall correctly. Will see how it goes and mention it when I take it in for the first service.

Happened to me a more than a few times with both the 120 and 135. Each time I think I haven't depressed the pedal enough. In the 135 the pedal can sometimes be rock hard which means I don't think I've moved the pedal enough. As essentially what is happening is the same thing as if you didn't have the pedal depressed - turns ignition on only.

So next time it happens try pressing the clutch pedal or brake pedal a bit further to prove my theory right or wrong.

Yes it happens if you release the clutch pedal too quickly or not fully depress it.

on auto cars it's the same with the brake pedal not being pressed firmly enough, though bmw have had the one way valve on the brake booster cause non start issues on 1's and 3's lately.

OH, I agree - especially on cold mornings - dang have to really press on it... both feet (kidding)
