3rd Brakelight: content of BMW service bulletin - BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (1M / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i)

This morning I discussed with two dealers in my area the fix for the 3rd brake light cracking issue, but their accounts of the repair/replacement procedures described in the BMW service bulletin were not consistent. One dealer told me that they would need to drill holes in the trunk and spray the holes with primer, but otherwise wasn't able to describe the procedures. The other dealer said that the bulletin does not call for drilling any holes.

I understand that there is a repair kit and a service bulletin on this; does anyone have a copy of the bulletin? I want to know what it says and whether BMW has updated the procedures since the bullentin was first circulated. I also want to know how effective the latest procedure is.

Good information. Thanks Cimbali. It looks like painting/grinding is only necessary for the convertible. Since I have a coupe, it sounds like the dealer who said painting/drilling was necessary didn't know what he was talking about.

Does anyone know how the December bulletin differs from the November bulletin?

I really hope they fixed this issue on the assembly line, don't want to get my March produced car with a broken 3rd light.

how annoying is this.... mines been cracked for a while. Yesterday it fell out but was connected to the car by the sticky bit behind so it was dangling around and has scratched the hell out of the boot!

Transparent duct tape will fix this. Scotch makes it.

My Third 3rd Brake Light Cover Brakelight LED Lens Broke or Cracked too. I will contact my SA regarding this TSB TSB's and follow up post with the warrany coverage process.

Mine cracked too. I replaced it myself and suspected that the original springs were too tight and only tightened the bolts about half way on the new one.

I figured this might be a common issue but I was in a rush to get it replaced and the place was closing in like 5 minutes so I bought it and got out of there.

I am going to forward that bulletin to my service manager and hope that he'll reimburse me for the part (and my labor???)

Replaced mine in 1 day. Thanks for the bulletin info, I emailed a copy to my SA 2 days before appointment.

Mine fell off as well.

When I called to make the appt, they told me they had 3 in stock and knew the procedure (TSB).

Appt tomorrow.

mine cracked as well, this morning. I'm (in a way) glad this is a known issue so the dealer doesn't think I broke it.

so this doesn't apply to vehicles produced after july 2008? My girlfriends car was produced in January 09 I believe but the 3rd brake light is also cracking. Might have to call up the dealer and see if they will do anything anyway.

mine was replaced 2 weeks ago and the new one already cracked in half. part of it fell off the car and the other part is stuck on there...

just bought new 128i last month, walked out to my car this morning, and noticed the 3rd brake light all cracked and popped out... First Reaction called detail shop where i had car detailed saturday,they looked at me like an idiot....then went on line and found you guys... it better be a warranty item...
