2009 BMM 135i  [4.75]
Winding Road Comparison: 128i winner over 370Z, Mustang GT, and Genesis Coupe!

REVIEW:
http://wrmag.nextautos.com/issue/46 (comparison begins on page 144)

The verdict:

After driving, and switching, and hours of talking, none of us came away from this test with a sense that there was one vehicle here that didn't belong. There were elements of particular vehicles that we could all agree were good or bad. These are hugely different, utterly entertaining cars, to a one. That said, the BMW is utterly brilliant, didn't lack for fans in our crew, and was doubtless the true winner of the day.

Pushed, and asked to vote on which cars we would all buy if the $32,000 in question were coming out of our own pockets, it broke down to individual taste, naturally. As an average, the BMW was the most highly ranked, and the Genesis the lowest.

Good read. Very interesting result. It was nice to read an article that was more interested in how these vehicles drove on the road, as opposed to on the track. And to see the 128 come away with such a good showing was a nice little surprise.

Best 128i Write Up Ever!!

Thanks for sharing. Anyone considering a 128i should read this article. There comments about the 370Z actually back up a post I made a while back that was flamed by some board troll.

The 370Z isn't much quicker than the 128! The 135 will probably put it to shame in terms of acceleration.

I wouldn't go about and bash on the 370, that car is a force to be reckoned with on the track.

I don't find it strange that a car that excels on the track would not be as strong in either a street race scenario, or in terms of more normal driving situations. I am not knocking a track car, but different animals. There are certainly some ripsnorting muscle cars that can beat anything off of the line, but due to other issues be difficult to manage on anything that involves curves. Besides, I was happy to find them discussing "fun" as a factor of the car, as that has always been about #1 in my car choices.

I looked through this issue, and found the other car I bought this year, the Jetta TDI Sportswagon. This is a very nice car for going back and forth to the beach, carry lots of stuff, and be a blast to drive. The 41 mpg highway loaded with 3 people, 2 dogs, and a back full of stuff is great too.

It does "feel" slow in a straight line. I didn't get to push it much around curves, etc...So I can't speak on that part but I'm sure it's a decent track car though.

0-60mph and 1/4 mile times don't lie though. Every article I've read (a few) has the numbers pretty darn close...

It just doesn't have the low-end torque like the 135i. It's a normally aspirated japanese engine, it has to be strung out above 5k rpm to get some power.

Great write up! The 128i definitely was the best all-round car in the group.

But keep in mind this was a ROAD test, by no means would the results be the same on a track...

Interesting read but there's no way I'd buy a 128 over a 370z. And if you want to cap the cost at $32k I'd take an Evo X over anything in that review.

The 128i is probably the better daily driver of the two, but I'd take a 370Z over one any day of the week as long as the back seat wasn't an issue. It's serious performance for the money.

Also, am I the only one who HATES that format? It defeats the whole purpose of a web-based magazine.

the evo x is cheap looking. the 370z, which i was considering, tries too hard and has NO space for ANYTHING! I felt like I was in a midget car.

the 128i is juuuust right.
