2008 BMW 128i  [0.00]
Price was an issue at the time. Wife just got done school and didn't have a job yet so projected a 1 income home for at least a year. Wanted a cooper s badly. Sat in a 128 at the Philly car show, looked up numbers and found that for cpo they were pretty equal in price ( for the cooperworks). 1er also had more power, almost same g's on the skid pad, way better interior, slightly less girlish, and rwd. Drove one and it was a done deal. May get a 135 next though. Would like the power.

Picked mine because I like driving it, not making posts about how it broke down.

F1 has as much to do with flying a plane as it does street cars.

While true it wasnt really the point. He said real bmws dont need turbos.

I consider bmw powered f1 cars to be real bmws. Unless youre one of those guys that believes any bmw with more than 2 wheels isn't a real bmw...then I dont know what to say.

1. 230hp is enough for me; for 21 years I had a 98hp Honda & was pleased.
2. much reduced chances of speeding tickets (have enuff of them already)
3. much better reliability (going from Honda to BMW I demand reliability)
4. most of my use would be off warranty so need reliability
5. $4K cheaper
6. found a lightly used 128 w/6MT, sportpkg at a very good price and in Sedona red I wanted.
7. maintenance and repairs cheaper; look at price of a front brake job between a 128 and a 135.

Since the first post also asks vice-versa, I got the 135i simply for the additional power. I drove a 128i and loved it and would have been happy with it. But figured if I was going to spend the money on another car, which I planned to keep for upwards of 10 years as I have my other cars, why not go for it. That and flooring it once in a while (on a nice open road w/out other traffic around) and getting pushed into the back of the seat is a heck of a lot of fun. Also, in all the cars Iv'e ever owned, none up to this point had been turbo'd, and I simply wanted to try one out. No regrets.

Not a fan of bikes, so no worries there.

F1 and DTM simply have nothing to do with the cars we drive. I actually think it is a huge problem and the reason we don't see greats like the E30 M3 anymore.

well we can argue that till the day we die.

I prefer Le Mans racing myself - thats where the real roadcar innovations are made.

I would say they have nothing to do with the cars we drive today, but I would say a lot of future dev happens in the top series. Clearly F1 is truly unique but some dev work in F1 could be priceless in the future. KERS is inevitable on daily drivers in the future.

The reason we don't see any E30 M3's anymore is because the companies (BMW especially) have gotten to big and their customer base has changed. They produce cars for the masses now, not the enthusiast. You factor in this shift in focus with the evolution of technology, inflation and we get further away from the originals. This happens in everything (that I can think of), it's a natural evolution, I for one am a fan of the influx of technology. However, having a bare bones option would also be nice.

What ever are you talking about? Turbos haven't been in F1 for 20 years. They've won plenty with both Williams and Sauber.

The only WCC title that BMW has in F1 was in a Brabham-BMW car driven by Piquet in 83.

I'll play this game. I could have had a decked out 128i, however I specifically wanted a 135i when I ordered mine. With my first 2 cars, I had to settle on the lesser version, especially with my last car, a Subaru. I couldn't get the WRX or the STi, and when it came to modding it I couldn't get all the cool stuff the other models got because the aftermarket companies didn't care about the Impreza. I then told myself that, regardless if it took me longer to save up, my next car will be the one I wanted, period.

My next car had to have a few certain things: at least 300hp, turbocharged and a sunroof. 3 things I've never had before. So, I had the perfect opportunity when I moved to Germany and I took it. Ordered my 135i and I've loved it ever since.

Sorry, I should've known when you said "win" you really meant "constructors championship". How silly of me.

Broken Vert - you have been on this forum for years, no shortage of sarcasm here.

Every time the na vs. fi debate is resurrected i want to stab myself in the eye. Both have their merits. I had the 1.8T in my former Audi, car was a blast. The N52 is good engine, happy with it for now. Hope to have an air cooled 911 in the near future.

Went on a tangent in my last post. Getting back on topic I'm currently trying to determine: 128 vs 135 and then N54 vs N55. I was trying to start a new thread to ask questions and get confirmations on what I've found but it seems I have to have more than a few posts to do so. I would also be willing to make a quick an easy 'go-to' chart for anyone going through the same process as me.

I was torn when making my purchase. In the end reliability was the deciding factor as this was going to be my daily driver. The money saved going with the 128 was used to load up the car with all the bells and whistled. I'm very happy with the decision, I guess it all comes down to what you want out of your 1'er.

i just ordered a manual 128i with no options at all other than the m package in white. the residual value makes this car stupid cheap as a lease- and i'm of the opionon that bmw's 6 is probably one of the best engines ever made and in this car it is at its most evolved state.

my dealer was shocked that anyone wouldn't want a sun roof, or heated seats or a color that cost more money etc. etc. hell, if i could i would have gotten roll up windows and no sound proofing and an a/c delete!

also, this is probably the last chance ever to get this engine in a new car that is also light and rwd. economics and fuel economy mean the next batch of entry level bmws will be front wheel drive and small strong turbo charged fours- there is a place for that- and i've owned plenty of turbo charged cars in the past- but for me my choice was to get what i really see as the last of the "real" bmws in the tradition of the 2002, the e30, the e36 etc.

i'm going to lease this thing- then probably buy it. i'm pretty convinced it's a perfect car for me. it'd also be intriguing to md the car with the sole purpose of making it lighter and faster- seems like it's a good platform for that.
